Instead of "ê" I get "^e". Thanks for fixing it!

Expected Results:

Sorry though i can reproduce with a french keyboard it works perfectly fine in the danishkeyboard i use.

This susggests to me it's a problem with the keyboard layout. Indeed if I try with another kde application it doesn't work with the french keyboard either.

So can really help you but will reassign to someone who might will be able to

Hi,
Just so to make you sure : my keyboard doesn't have any issue whatsoever. I use any application with ê when needed, except with Calligra Word which I am just discovering. (In an Openbox branded environment). In Firefox, in Libreoffice and other apps, Geany for instance, I don't meet with any issue keyboard related.

Best regards,
Mélodie

Hi,
I noticed the issue exists also in Calligra Stage. I suddenly had the wish to use a word containing "ê" in it and I couldn't.

Can you fix it please?

Best regards,
Mélodie

As I said it is not related to Calligra, but is a system wide bug - The applications you mention are not qt applications. I would suggest you file a bug with your destribution.

However I've also tried and I am able to write ê just fine - but please note:

alt gr + ù does what you expect
alt gr + ç produces the ^ immediately

Hi,
FYI, I reported the bug here:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/calligra/+bug/1562877

as you mentioned a wide system bug, I did a research on the web, and found some people who has similar issues a few years ago, solved it by removing a .xinputrc file, I did the same, and removed ibus too. In this one machine it didn't help.

I have another machine running the Trusty LTS version, where I noticed that bug in all apps! There, removing .xinputrc and ibus solved it. I just have to find how to solve it for the Calligra apps in Xenial now. And also I need to check if get the same issue with Calligra in Trusty (LTS 14.04.4) which I will do next.

btw: I should not have to use AltGr to get vowels with ^ on them, just hit ^ once and the letter needed (e, a, u, i or o) right after.

Regards,
Mélodie

In any case it's not related to Calligra but something ubuntu will have to fix
Comment 7 melodie 2016-03-28 17:10:24 UTC
Hi,

In any case you devs will have to make up your mind : in my Ubuntu systems, Calligra is the only suite which triggers this with my usual keyboard setting:
*********
$ cat /etc/default/keyboard
# Check /usr/share/doc/keyboard-configuration/README.Debian for
# documentation on what to do after having modified this file.

# The following variables describe your keyboard and can have the same
# values as the XkbModel, XkbLayout, XkbVariant and XkbOptions options
# in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

XKBMODEL="pc105"
XKBLAYOUT="fr"
XKBVARIANT="oss"
XKBOPTIONS="terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"

# If you don't want to use the XKB layout on the console, you can
# specify an alternative keymap. Make sure it will be accessible
# before /usr is mounted.
# KMAP=/etc/console-setup/defkeymap.kmap.gz
BACKSPACE="guess"

********

I'll check with some French buddies using KDE apps under Archlinux if they happen to meet with this issue.

(did you mark it solved? As far as I'm concerned, its not solved in any way… )

"make up you mind" : sorry what I meant was "agree ones with others". I don't have any answer from the Ubuntu team atm.
Comment 9 Camilla Boemann 2016-03-28 17:16:11 UTC
We don't do anything - we get the characters that the keyboard gives us - it's ubuntu that gives us the key strokes.

But ubuntu doesn't give qt applications keys strokes in the same way as it gives to the applications you mention. That is why those applications are irrelevant. Please try with another kde og qt application and you will see calligra doesn't do anything special.

I am sorry but there is nothing we can do. I wish you the best of luck. And please don't reopen the bug again.

Hello,

Excuse my ignorance : what is a " kde og qt application"?
Comment 11 Camilla Boemann 2016-03-28 17:33:56 UTC
Applications that uses the Qt toolkit.

It's not easy to guess if you don't know. One way would be looking at the dependencies of the application. do you use vlc mediaplayer ?

another easy applications to install and try would be: kwrite
Comment 12 melodie 2016-03-28 18:26:02 UTC
Good evening,

I use VLC and I just tried to use a ^ and it just ignored it. I didn't install kwrite, instead I tried to create a new virtual machine in Virtualbox which does use Qt, and give the new vm a name with ^ accents, this is what it produces:

So yes, it's related. Thanks for your insight.

Glad I could help - I believe the distribution can help out if you tell them this. They somehow need to update the keyboard layout for qt applcations so the ^ key behaves as a dead character
