Description Janet 2016-03-07 22:49:56 UTC
It seems as if there is no option for the popup in the new quicklaunch widget - at least if you use German language. "Enable popup" is translated to "Benachrichtung aktivieren" (enable notification) which I guess no German can associate with a popup menu. I only found the popup option after seeing a screenshot in English. An understandable translation of "popup" in this case would be "Aufklappmenü" or even "Pop-Up".

Reproducible: Always

Hello Janet,

I can certainly change that but I do not have a developer account to commit the changes. Is there a KDE translation glossary available to check how "popup" is meant to be translated according to KDE standards?

I also noticed that in "Benachrichtung aktivieren" an "i" is missing at least in your message.

Hi,

at least the typo is not in the translation:
msgid "Enable popup"
msgstr "Benachrichtigung aktivieren"

There is some sort of gossary:
https://community.kde.org/KDE_Localization/de/StandardUebersetzungen

But it's not that strictly applyable because the original texts are not unified enough. For example this "Popup" is basically nothing. There are many things that can pop up. Menus. notifications, messages in general. And I guess that's how the translation came to be. "Enable Popup"? It's more likely you can enable or disable a notification than a menu, isn't it? We cannot check every string in every place so we have to approximate here and there with some common sense. And that might fail.

That's why people like you are important for the KDE translation. :)

Umm, maybe you can explain to me how I can see that Quicklaunch widget? I do not have it in my list of desktop widgets.

Sorry for the typo. If you use German translation you might want to search for "Schnellstarter" in the widget container.
Comment 4 Frederik Schwarzer 2016-03-11 09:37:12 UTC
Unfortunately it's not there. My Frameworks installation might be too old (5.16).

Could you please add a screen shot of the Popup?

BTW: In the initial KF5 port of quicklaunch, the author was calling it "popup drawer". Creativity. :)

In the screenshot you can see two quicklaunch widgets, with and without activated popup. The popup in "action" you can see in Bug 360232 (no need to upload twice).

I am using KF 5.18 and plasma-widgets-addons is version 5.5.4.

Much better, that describes it best :). I also call those extra popup menus "Schubladen" :).

If I may ask, where do you call them "Schubladen"? Just for yourself or in any translation project?

If the same kind of elements are called "Aufklappfenster" elsewhere, we should go with consistency ... even though I do not like the word very much.

For myself. I also have seen the term "drawer" somewhere else - but I don't remember where.

I agree on both, and consistency is important. i guess the term at least is understandable.
