Description akhilesh 2016-02-24 20:08:42 UTC
If I open apps which have custom window rules, entire KDE freezes. I had custom window rules(just the position ones) since a couple of weeks. Today, it randomly started freezing the desktop if I launched any app with a custom rule.

I fixed it by deleting the 2 kwinrules config contents.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Set a custom window rule for any window, such as "remember position"
2. Run application with custom rule
3. All of KDE freezes and hve to reboot. But can enter tty.

Has this been reproducible of you you just assume a connection? I mean, are you sure this is related to the rules or did KDE just freeze once and you believe it's been due to the rules because it didn't happen afterwards?

Please export and attach such rule.
Does KDE "unfreeze" if you suspend the compositor? (SHIFT+Alt+F12)

Hi,
It seems that I am unable to reproduce the bug. Also, I was unable to delete the rules from the GUI settings and have to edit the config files. I've put up a screenshot of the setting I had previously. Except for the following 2 options, all of the others were left untouched:

I will remember to test the compositor thing if I can reproduce the bug.

I do remember being able to move the mouse, but the whole desktop - taskbar, applications(minimized or maximized), shortcuts to switch workspaces, shortcut to launch krunner failed to respond in a any way whatsoever.

Which client in particular? Video player?
Comment 5 akhilesh 2016-02-25 08:09:34 UTC
I had the setting specified in the screenshot on:

1. MPV
2. Dolphin
3. Firefox

All 3 of them caused a KDE freeze. Other applications which did not have this setting, such as konversation(since it starts centered and not on the corner of the screen) worked fine and did not cause a KDE freeze.
Comment 6 akhilesh 2016-02-25 08:11:40 UTC
It froze as soon as I launched any of the 3 applications, while it was drawing the windows, I guess. I did have the same setting for a week. I got the freeze issue yesterday and it seems I am unable to reproduce it.

Did the freeze ever happen again? If yes did you notice any pattern and are maybe able to reproduce it at will?

If so could you please switch to a virtual terminal and attach gdb to the running kwin process and then get the output of: t a a bt
