The frame around icons in Plasma 5 is much wider and this causes icons to be smaller in comparison to KDE 4. I show frame (see attachments) just to illustrate the issue but even when frame is not visible icons in Plasma 5 remain smaller. And because of wide frame they are in bigger distance from each other (look at how far is trash from home in terms of pixels). In KDE 4 icons are bigger, frame is narrower and icons seems to be closer to each other, which makes better impression. Discussion https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=130931 As you can see it concerns both folderview and default view. Reproducible: Always

I think the frame around all icon's text is very annoying too. I really don't like it and that was not the case in KDE 4.x ; Another problem for me is the icons snaps to the old position while moving in 50% of the time I do that. Just like it's fixed with a rubberband. Super annoying ! Will see if I find a corresponding bug-article.
I also think, the appearance of the desktop icons was much better in KDE 4, because of the smaller distances.
Starting in Plasma 5.6 the icon widget will have a drop shadow rather than a box behind it. The icons in the Folder layout will also have a drop shadow rather than the rectangle behind the label. The only remaining issue would be the overly large selection rectangle.
I personally like it the way it is; this needs the VDG to chime in anyhow.
just updated to Plasma 5.6 and indeed the box -frame is gobe ..beautiful now :-) Unfortunately the icons wont move anymore means they are tied with a rubberband to their position : after moving they jump back to their old position. If the option "lock mini programs" is active ! wow... :-)) a new bug ...wonderful ;-) if theres no lock then the icons could be moved again...but that should be the case regardless of the option to lock the widgets.....shouldn't it ?
I also already reported this bug two weeks ago and hope it will be fixed soon ;) https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=360578
As our friend wolfi323 says here https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=130931 the frame of the icons is hardcoded. I take it that he is right there. But perhaps that is not at all the issue here. Perhaps the issue is how big or small the icon is within this frame. Perhaps the answer to that question is hardcoded too but I don't know at all if that is the case.
> Perhaps the issue is how big or small the icon is within this frame. Yes. But not only that. Actually the size of the icon is a consequence of frame size. Just notice the space below icon title "Konsole" and on the left and on the right side of the icon on attached "Plasma 5 icon frame size" screenshot. It also causes the space between icons much bigger than necessary because of this wider frame. In this screenshot Home and Trash could be closer to each other if frame wasn't so wide. I reported this bug because I find the way it was in KDE 4 much better. Icons in KDE 4 were closer to each other.
I totally agree with you. It doesn't give me joy looking at iconborders. It would be great if one could set the width of the iconborder himself.
Please, fix that already. It is ridiculous with such large spaces.
Just ĺike icon sizes and number of text lines are already easily configurable, why wouldn't "Icon spacing" be configurable as well in "Folder View Settings -> Icons" GUI in Plasma 5? I'm quite sure there are people who tend to like wider & narrower spacing choices for desktop icons, depending on their taste. Give a free choice so that an user could configure the spacing as liked, and community opinions/debates such as "too wide" or "too narrow" could be then simply forgotten as the spacing would be easily configurable by the user him/herself.
workaround Reducing space between desktop icons. [SOLVED] https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=289&t=136447 I still would love to have this as an option in settings.
The spacing has been greatly reduced in Plasma 5.10.
I'm aware of the workaround @apache linked above. However, I'd still prefer a GUI option. I feel the spacing is still too wide by default. Since we don't have an easy GUI method to "fix" the issue, I use the workaround for now. Couldn't still say the issue is "RESOLVED FIXED", though.
The issue isn't solved because with using the workaround the icons gets bugged and sometimes it is really hard to mark or move them.
I'm not referring to the workaround, I'm referring to the fact that in git master (what will become 5.10) we've significantly reworked the delegates, making the resulting icon grid much tighter (along with changes to mouse interaction code to make it still feel good).
Okay. Sounds promising, Eike! I'll keep waiting for what's to come then.

The space must be like between Installation and Trash: https://s14.postimg.org/yqfkktk8x/Screenshot_from_2017-03-28_15-19-27.png Otherwise the space is still vast. Off: The clock is enormous too...
It's similar to your screenshot now.
This screenshot is from Plasma 5.9 and the spaces between icons are still big. There is bug between Trash and Installation items but there the space is ok. It is, however, isn't the same between all other items where spaces are still big.
How many times do I need to write 5.10? :)
Oh, my fault, I'm sorry. The screenshot is from latest openSUSE Krypton from the link you provided: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/KDE:/Medias/images/iso/openSUSE_Krypton.x86_64-5.9.90-Build11.33.iso If the spaces are really like between Installation and Trash, it would be great!
