Currently, Kicker shows a very large text in application overview ("Suchbegriff eingeben…" in German). It shows a longer (still very large) text when typing something ("Es wird nach »a« gesucht" in German).

I propose a different solution: Display a search field with default text ("Type to start searching") which has focus. This UI elements can be reused and will be re-cognized by users. Having a common GUI widget they are used to is easier for users than haing some text to read.
