Description Michel Briand 2016-01-09 07:03:58 UTC
qif import does not offer an option to choose for other charsets.

My bank creates a qif file in ISO-8859-1 charset.

Are you having to download first, then save in ISO-8859-1 before import?

Might your bank have a CSV format option, sometimes called excel or spreadsheet, as the CSV importer does allow you to select a character set?

Otherwise, I'm afraid there might be a wait for a fix, and for your distro to pick it up.

Separately, 4.6.6 is pretty old-hat now and it might be worth looking for 4.7.2. It won't help with your current problem, unfortunately, but numerous bugs have been fixed.

Did you try to use "iconv -f iso-8859-1 -t utf-8" as QIF filter? See https://docs.kde.org/stable4/en/extragear-office/kmymoney/details.impexp.qifimp.html#details.impexp.qifimp.profile for more details. On *NIX systems there's no need to reinvent the whee.

Thomas,

setting the command you suggested as an Import Filter works perfectly !
(Only I missed the idea to open the import profile dialog ;-)... !)

Thank you.

The only thing to think about is to document this feature of import filter to help new users / prevent this question again.

Michel,

Since you just went through this, if you can propose a few sentences and where in the manual they would be most effective, I'll be glad to actually include them.

Jack, Wasn't this largely covered by Thomas in comment #2 ? Unless, perhaps, in a FAQ for gotchas?

Yes, this was covered by Thomas' comment.

Anyway a good way to help (drive) users to the feature not well known is to place a small label into the import dialog, just under the profile selection drop down list.
With a quick sentence like this : "to customize import profile, like charset filter, please click on the profile edit button".

In the profile edit dialog, add a suggestion for the charset conversion filter : "to convert your file in UTF-8 (kmymoney charset), please use this import filter:
iconv -f iso-8859-1 -t utf-8
"

In the documentation, copy & elaborate all that in the section §4.8 (french translation, document for kmymoney 4.6).

Character-set conversion is one particular use of the import filter, but as there are others, I think it might be better instead of a hint about just one of them, to refer the user to the handbook section.

How was this bug resolved and in which version ?
https://kmymoney.org/faq.php does not have any related entry, git log of kmymoney source repo does not show any commit refering this bug and svn translation repo too.
Comment 9 Jack 2017-10-30 16:08:33 UTC
I think the resolution was for me to update the manual and faq. Comment 6 also suggested an additional note be added to the import dialog - but I have not checked if this was done. It is probably safe to say fixed in 5.0 since I do not recall actually making the change to the docs.
