I tried changing several different setting and closing systemsettings after hitting apply. I haven't encountered any crashes. I'm running version 5.5.1 on Gentoo. Also this bug seams to be a duplicate of bug 355711, that isn't marked as resolved.
After reading comments on bug 355711 and changing to "Classic Tree View" mode I'm also experiencing the problem. Because bug 355711 isn't resolved, please mark this bug as "RESOLVED: DUPLICATE of bug 355711". I commented on bug 355711 with information that in version 5.5.1 the problem is still present.
