Hello Harri This problem mysteriously appeared to be connected with absence of loopback interace. Since I have only dialup connection initially during the installation I didn't enabled networking with RH installation scripts (actually just netconfig) so loopback interface was missing - what seems to cause the problem. Later when investigating the problem I enabled loopback manually and this solved the problem completely - still I am not sure why KDE design should rely on loopback but apparently Konqueror/Kmail etc. can live without it just fine until KPPP was started. I would like to ask you to move this bug to "Suggestions for improvement" section - in my opinion under any circumstances KDE should NOT rely on loopback which as it appeared may not be configured properly by default by some "popular distributions" or at least give some explicit error message if loopback is missing. FreeBSD 4.8 RC KDE 3.1 Installed from ports also tested on KDE-3.0.5 SuSE 8.1 Installed from rpm's This problem does not occur in either of the two platforms listed above. It may indeed be a distro specific bug. WORKSFORME
Subject: Re: Konqueror fails to start/Kmail freezes when running KPPP Yes that's completely true since both FreeBSD and Suse enable loopback interface by default so distribution really matters. --- J E Drews <j.e.drews@worldnet.att.net> wrote: > ------- You are receiving this mail because: ------- > You reported the bug, or are watching the reporter. > > http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=35635 > > > > > ------- Additional Comments From > j.e.drews@worldnet.att.net 2003-03-09 04:39 ------- > FreeBSD 4.8 RC > KDE 3.1 > Installed from ports > also tested on > KDE-3.0.5 > SuSE 8.1 > Installed from rpm's > > This problem does not occur in either of the two > platforms listed above.
