Description Ferry 2015-11-17 21:30:01 UTC
I have have 2 displays, each with their own panel and starter.

When I use the left starter, Kontact appears on the right screen, when I use the right starter Kontact starts on the left screen.

However, Kate appears to start on the same same screen the starter used.

It is not clear to me what determines the screen where the application opens.

However, in day to day work it is driving me nuts having to search for the application when starting it.

Any hints to work around this are greatly appreciated.

Reproducible: Always

Dolphin and Firefox always appears on the right screen regards from which screen it is started.

What's the active screen setting in "kcmshell5 kwinoptions"?
If only some applications are affected, you can deny their geometry requests or force them onto a specific screen in "kcmshell5 kwinrules"

About kontact: is that already a running instance (ie. starting it just shows an existing window, like if you'd use a systray icon)?
Comment 3 Ferry 2015-11-19 10:04:39 UTC
@Thomas I did try "kcmshell5 kwinoptions" under the Advanced tab to change the Placement - Intelligent setting with no success. But you are right: under the Focus tab there is a setting "Behavior with multiple screens" - "separate screen focus" (I'm translating from the NL locale so might be inaccurate).

This setting was OFF, now ON. I can confirm that ON resolves this problem for me.

I don't know what this setting is intended to do, but it might be that for multiple displays this setting should be ON default.

Thanks for your help.

I had actually bet on the "Active screen follows mouse" setting (iirc on the first tab), but if focus separation is sufficient, that's even better =)

The default probably stems from the xinerama area (where multiscreen was either zaphod style or a video wall)

This bug report is quite old. Can you please confirm, that the issue still persists with KDE 5.23?
