Description gjditchfield 2015-11-11 16:36:50 UTC
Logging in is slow compared to earlier versions of KDE.

I created a new user ID, in case the problem is caused by old configuration files. When I log in with my normal ID or with the new test ID, the login manager takes 5 to 6 seconds to fill in the blue progress bar. Then the login screen rests, unchanging, until the 20- to 22-second mark, whereupon the user's desktop starts to fade in.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. log out
2. log in
3. wait

My computer started with a fresh installation of Kubuntu 15.04. Later I upgraded in place to 15.10, and still later added the ppa:kubuntu-ppa/backports repository. Both the "stock" and backports versions of 15.10 show this delay. I don't remember any noticeable delay in the 15.04 version.

Unlike bug 354111, I have a single monitor.

In the stock version, the panel was even slower to launch. Often, after the desktop appeared, a nearly transparent panel showing just a ghost of the clock widget would linger for tens of seconds before becoming opaque. I haven't seen that happen with the backports version today.

Oh, are you sure about that version number being Plasma 5.4.3? If so it's not the thing I linked.

I'm going to need something better to go on than "it's slow", and that xsession-errors file has no timestamps so that basically tells me absolutely nothing.

How slow? what's being autostarted? if you remove something does that change anything?
Can you make a bootchart log of the bootup?
Comment 4 David Edmundson 2015-11-11 23:00:05 UTC
Marking back as needs info, as I don't have anything I can use at the moment.

bootchart of a slow login

bootchart attempting to cover activity during a login by a new, uncustomized account created by the KDE User Manager.

I didn't know about Bootchart. Neat stuff.

If I understand the chart, the problem is Akonadi. The Akonadi Server self-test did report errors which I haven't figured out how to clear. Unless you think I'm following the wrong lead, I'll take this bug report elsewhere.

I just opened (and closed, dupe) ticket #355880 because I got the same problem with slow logins.

I measured how long the login takes a couple of times and it always was around 31 secs. After 4 seconds, the bar is at ~80%, after anotehr 4 secs it's at 100% and it stays there for around 23 seconds until it transitions to desktop.

I assume that something is waiting for a timeout but I have no clue what causes this. Using other users had no effect, I even created new ones with the same result. It happens each time I login, not just after cold start or reboot. I can only lock/unlock the desktop without problems.

I tried system-analyze blame but I think that happens before login

$ systemd-analyze blame
  8.760s NetworkManager-wait-online.service
  766ms dev-dm\x2d0.device

What else can I do/upload/post to give you the information you need?

A fresh installed of kubuntu 15.10 leaves me with a very slow login (~30 secs) compared to earlier versions of kubuntu (2-3 secs) . Updating packages does not help. I will probably downgrade to 15.04.
