Description Uri Herrera 2015-11-08 22:52:57 UTC
There's a clear preference for the Plasma theme that Plasma 5 had been using since around 5.2 over the new one, despite the minor differences and the actual improvements.

The bug is all about removing the current master and revert to the previous version.

Reproducible: Always

5.16 got tagged today, which means the new theme is just about to get released.
*IF* you're serious, we need to do this today. After that, I'm not OK with flip flopping about.

The problem was, is and always will be that we can't have massive changes of everything at once.

Deisgn is itterative - if you start completely anew every now and again, you throw away all the work the previous designers did.

It's hard to test - and given the (incredibly stupid) location of the theme any changes hit existing users stable systems, which is a big no-no for UI changes.

*something* will always be disliked - if you focus on the part someone dislikes. If you submit 10 changes and get 9 in, great! If you submit 10 and then go all or nothing, you'll get arguments.

Yes I am serious; and I'm sorry for making the bug report today.

We had an IRC chat with Valorie.

Relevant snippets:

[00:33] <uriherrera> Because apparently, the previous theme was better, despite it's deficiencies. Better how it goes over my head. So if the theme that I made is not liked then I don't see a reason to keep it., I'll then just have it in my repo and whoever wants it can get it and use it.

[00:36] <d_ed> so where are you reading this "apparently the previous theme was better"

[00:36] <uriherrera> in the RR, in the bug reports, in the forum

the fact is that's tagged by now, so may be tricky.
we can revert some elements by emergency, but i would suggest to not worry.
during 4.x we had at each single change requests of getting back to the old theme, in every single revision, it's normal, that's the universal answer to change ;)
(and yep, i admit having had a not nice reaction myself, i do have some issues, but it's fine for me if we go with this for 5.5, and after it, change pieces one by one without big changes but a steady evolution istead).

Can't we split the icons into a separate package and offer it as plasma-5.4-icons or something? Or maybe release the whole 5.4/5.14 theme and call it "Breeze classic"? That could make most people happy, perhaps.

Fwiw I personally find the new iconset much more harder to read/recognize than the previous version(s), especially in small panels on hidpi screens.

It is now definitely too late and I am not flipping the user's desktop twice.

Note that icons are released with frameworks releases, not the Plasma release, so this is about Frameworks 5.16, not Plasma 5.5

@Martin, go make a package on kde-look then.
