Most graphical software in this world provides exact version information, if you click on "Help => About ..." In KDE there used to be two menus: About $Applicationname About KDE "About KDE" usually provided needed version informations at a position titled "Platform Version". This information was especially nessecary for reporting bugs right here. Since switching from KDE 4.14 to 5.4 all version information in "About KDE" is gone! Everything what's left is some version information in "About $Application". Example for "Konsole": Version: 15.08.0 KDE Frameworks: 5.15.0 Qt 5.5.0 (build against 5.5.0) This is obviously not "the KDE version". People are used to talk in about their KDE applications in a way "Konsole like it comes with KDE 5.4 ...". And for reporting this bug the bugtracking-system gives me the possibilities to choose a KDE version between 5.0.0 and 5.4.3. Nothing like 5.15.0. The QT version is only helpful, for creating QT related (or upstream) bugs. And the Konsole version 15.08.0 is only needed for reporting Konsole related bugs. So please bring back the KDE version number in the "About KDE" window! Reproducible: Always
Is this bug report about Plasma shell UI not offering a Help menu? If not, this is a duplicate of bug 351337.
The Help menu is offered and working correctly. This is about the (not anymore) provided information in the "About KDE" window, accessible via the Help menu.
So does Plasma Shell have an "About Plasma Shell" dialog? If yes, you can find the version of the underlying frameworks in the "Version" tab.
P.S. Maybe this doesn't belongs to the product "Plasmashell". This isn't about a certain application (like Konsole). Every KDE program showing menus has this problem. So this is about the feature by the KDE framework, providing the "About KDE" entry in Help menus. Originally I tried to associate this with the product "kde". But that product only has versions 4.x (not 5.x). Maybe you can help me finding the right product? (if it isn't Plasmashell)
About $Applicationname Tab "Version"
Yes, I know there are some version informations in that place. But as stated in my initial post, there isn't the KDE version. Just the applications version, the Qt version and some mysterious "KDE Frameworks" version. "KDE Frameworks" sounds like what I'm looking for. But for example in Konsole running on KDE 5.4.1 the ""KDE Frameworks" version is stated as 5.15.0 !?!? So what does this version number tell me? It's definitely not the KDE version (because that is 5.4.1).
There is no "KDE version". KDE is a community. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of bug 351337 ***
5.4.1 is the Plasma version.
Ah, so you want the application to tell you the version of Plasma? That won't be relevant for Konsole devs. If you need to find the Plasma version number, kinfocenter is the eaisiest place.
(In reply to Christoph Feck from comment #8) > 5.4.1 is the Plasma version. Ahh, I knew there was some change in the use of the word KDE... I really don't like that wording stuff... KDE used to be the name of the "Desktop environment" and people tend to say "I use KDE" or "I use Gnome" or "She uses Unity". Although somebody saying "I use KDE" might just use "Plasma" (correct word for that?) for the panel but 90% of the applications he uses are GTK stuff. So I probably was looking for the "Plasma" version 5.4.1. (In reply to David Edmundson from comment #9) > [...] > If you need to find the Plasma version number, kinfocenter is the eaisiest > place. I didn't thought of the kinfocenter. And I used to find it very convenient in KDE 4.x to have the KDE/Plasma version in every KDE application at "Help => About KDE". Please bring it back there! Or put it into the "Help => About $Applicationname" window. And could someone please tell me what this strange "KDE Frameworks" version 5.15.0 means???
And could someone please tell me what this strange "KDE Frameworks" version 5.15.0 means??? It's the version the konsole developer wants. It's the version of the KDE libraries.
(In reply to David Edmundson from comment #11) > And could someone please tell me what this strange "KDE Frameworks" version > 5.15.0 means??? > > It's the version the konsole developer wants. It's the version of the KDE > libraries. Hmm... thinking... Do you realize how hard it became to me, to correctly report this bug? And it probably also didn't became a big-fun topic for you! This is about an issue which is in every application having an menu. So I can't clearly put it to a single application like Kmail or Konsole (used that one just as an example in my first message). So had I that "Plasma kind of replaced KDE" thing somewhere in an unconscious part of my head. That's probably why I choose "Plasmashell" as the product for this bug. Because, as said, the product KDE in this bug tracker only has the versions 4.x (not 5.x). And there is no product named "Plasma" in this bug tracker. Just "Plasmashell". So I choose that one. And all this thinking just because of the wording for KDE changed (I'm really not a friend of such wording-change-stuff). And everything just to report a little (but important) missing version information in the "About ..." windows. Additionally this 5.15.0 version seems to became very important. Although distributions and IT news are all talking about KDE 5.4. Not about KDE 5.15 or even about Plasma 5.15. Really not a friend of those wording-changes and also not about those version-number-changes... There used to be 4.12, 4.13, 4.14 So now there should be 5.1, 5.2, 5.3, 5.4, ... But not instantly 5.15 ! That's confusing! Nevertheless: This bug tracker gives me the choice of the version numbers 5.0.x, 5.1.x, 5.2.x, 5.3.x and 5.4.x So either this 5.4 version number is still important and should be listed in the "About ..." windows. Or the bug tracker should change and offer those 5.15 version numbers for creating a bug.
