Description DrSlony 2015-10-25 23:23:36 UTC
The icon Breeze uses for GIMP is bad.
This is the used icon:
http://filebin.net/d85ggykxye/gimp.svg
This is the standard GIMP icon everyone knows:
https://git.gnome.org/browse/gimp/plain/desktop/256x256/gimp.png

Please consider improving the Breeze GIMP icon so it looks familiar to GIMP users, or remove it altogether so the official icon is used.

Reproducible: Always

"Bad" is not feedback. Please provide proper, usable feedback.
Comment 2 DrSlony 2015-10-26 00:02:44 UTC
Are you serious that my report is improper and unusable? Take a look at the links. The GIMP icon looks like a square nothing. When I asked a GIMP dev to verify whether the icon change was upstream, he responded saying it looked like a placeholder.
Comment 3 Uri Herrera 2015-10-26 00:08:11 UTC
Yes. "Bad" is not usable feedback for a designer to work with. Otherwise this is a bug report about you not liking the icon, in which case you can remove the svg file from your system and the original GIMP icon will be used.
Comment 4 DrSlony 2015-10-26 00:32:07 UTC
There was more to the report after "bad". I explained that the icon is unfamiliar to GIMP users.
It does look like a placeholder. Seeing as Breeze is the default icon theme in Plasma 5, I think that is a problem.
Comment 5 Uri Herrera 2015-10-26 00:37:20 UTC
Ok, fair enough. However, the Gimp logo, Wilber, is made in a different perspective than icons in Breeze. If there are other proposals (other than resorting to use Wilber) for the icon I can check them here.
Comment 6 DrSlony 2015-10-26 00:45:05 UTC
I think adapting Wilber's style to Breeze would be best in terms of familiarity and instant identification... Using him as a silhouette in a canvas, or perhaps something like the Inkscape icon.

As Uri is gone and I don't want to discuss if something is good or bad in addition I don't make app icons. If you are interested in an better gimp icon you are VERY welcome. read the icon guideline and upload a new one. I would be happy if it is better than the icon now.

sorry that I can't help you by doing something for you. It's open source I give you the possibility to increase breeze.
Comment 8 DrSlony 2016-02-29 18:57:51 UTC
I've made icons before, maybe I can help. Could you link me to the guideline?
Comment 9 andreas 2016-02-29 19:06:13 UTC
the guidelines are quite good.

Gimp icon in plasma5 comparison

Here is an example of Wilbur, the Gimp mascot and Icon.
The current icon look like a square colored with a gradient. Maybe a placeholder??

The spectacle, libreoffice, kate, konsole are blobs. I normally turn off Information Tip, but I can tell what things are by the icons any more.
Comment 11 andreas 2016-07-14 07:19:02 UTC
you are welcome to send an gimp icon.
Comment 12 Russell 2016-07-14 08:15:25 UTC
I just use the one provided by the linux distribution or go to https://www.gimp.org/about/linking.html. They have a couple there.

In this case, opensuse-tumbleweed, /usr/share/icons/hicolor/32x32/apps/gimp.png. But when I right-click the gimp icon (it happens to all icons on the panel), and select "Icon Settings", I get a window that says "Keyboard Shortcuts". There is nothing about Icon's on that window. So at this moment, I don't know how to change these icons.

I was able to change the launcher's icon to /usr/share/icons/oxygen/32x32/apps/kde.png, by right-clicking the launcher, selecting "Application Menu Settings" and checking the box, "Use custom image" and browsing to the location.
Comment 13 andreas 2016-07-14 08:18:45 UTC
remove the gimp icon from /usr/share/icons/breeze (default) /apps/64/ and you will get the default icon from the gimp package
