Currently, the Project Bin navigation with the mouse is as follows: 1. Double-clicking a clip icon opens the clip properties of that clip. However, to double-click the icon, the first click opens the clip in the clip monitor. This is unavoidable when needing to double-click a clip. 2. Double-clicking a text field (e.g. Clip or Folder name, Date, Description, etc.) allows you to rename or edit the selected text. 3. Double-clicking a folder expands the tree (in tree mode) or enters the folder (in icon mode) to show the contents of the folder. 4. Double-clicking the "Back" button while inside a folder returns the user to the parent folder, or the root of Project Bin itself. The double-click function does seem to have multiple, and rather confusing, functions that vary in the Project Bin. My proposal: In the "Settings" menu list at the top of Kdenlive, have a check box somewhere with the text "Single-click in Project Bin". When check box is enabled: 1. Single-clicking a clip icon will open it in the clip monitor. 2. Single-clicking the clip text fields (clip name, date, and details) will ALSO open the clip in the clip monitor. Double-clicking the text fields will still edit the text field itself, allowing the user to rename or edit the text. 3. Single-clicking a folder, in tree view, will expand the folder, showing its contents; single-clicking a folder in icon view will enter the folder, showing its contents. Double-clicking the folder in tree view will do nothing, and the same with the folder in icon view. 4. Single-clicking the text field of a folder in tree view will simply select/highlight the folder, but nothing more (double-click will edit text). Single-clicking the text of a folder in icon view will select/highlight the folder, but will also do nothing. Double-click will edit the text. 5. Single-clicking the "Back" button while inside a folder in icon view will return the user to the parent directory. Double-clicking it will do nothing. When the check box is disabled in the settings menu, EVERYTHING would require double-clicking to execute its function, while single-clicking will only select/highlight the clip/folder/etc. Meaning double-click to open clip in clip monitor, change texts in text field, expand folder (in tree view), enter folder (in icon view), go back to parent folder (in icon view), etc. Hope this helps. :) Reproducible: Always Suggested while Using Kdenlive 15.09.0 (kdenlive_15.08.1+git20151006.0139+15.10-0_amd64) in Kubuntu 15.10 beta 2 x64.
OR, a much better idea for managing text fields with the mouse, would be to remove the editing of text fields by mouse-clicking all together! And instead have the text fields somewhere in the clip properties menu/tabs (maybe even create their own tab called "Edit Details", where the user could edit the name, date, and description details there. I really feel that would make the interaction a LOT easier, and solve the rather difficult conundrum of how to handle the text fields specifically in the Project Bin. Then, with that route taken, you could treat the text field behavior the same as the clip icon, and give it the exact same mouse functions, simplifying the Project Bin behavior for the user even more! I feel that'd be a really streamlined and intuitive route, and even follows suit with the clip properties purpose in the first place: to edit the clip's properties, you know? :) This would also resolve a bug I reported a while back: Bug 351712 (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=351712)
I would still like to have double clicks for editing ... because this is existing with what I can do in many other applications, not least file managers. However, I totally agree that this has to be consistent ... which currently is not.
