Description Unknown 2015-09-28 21:04:33 UTC
See video for motion blur example (it's a tutorial video, but it'll show the effect in question).

The Kdenlive title creator is good, but one of it's constraints is you can't get a smooth moving, rotating, scaling, zooming text. It's very jagged, rigid, and often times choppy because the motion doesn't look natural. Adding a motion blur effect option to the title creator (or even possibly as its own effect in the effect list) would be an incredible benefit to Kdenlive, and for many people who do motion graphics, would probably even switch over to Kdenlive just for that.

Thanks for reading! Cheers!

Reproducible: Always

Suggested while using Kdenlive 15.09.0 on Kubuntu 15.10 x64 beta 2.

I was just testing the latest master git build of kdenlive 16.07.70... and... holy cow, the movement is MUCH smoother! A little more testing and I may get to very satisfyingly mark this bug as resolved!
Comment 2 Wegwerf 2016-08-12 15:23:21 UTC
Jesse, is this a timeline playback issue? Or is the jerky movement also in the final rendered video? If this is instead a timeline playback issue ... shouldn't this be solved by the timeline preview rendering feature?
Comment 3 Unknown 2016-08-13 02:07:24 UTC
Wegwerf, no sir, the playback is fine in these tests. Rather, the issue is that there is no motion blur quality similar to what we see in film when motion is inherent with 24fps, 48hz shutter speed, etc.

When I look at Blender, for example, motion blur is very evident in moving text. It looks like it should as if it was filmed with a video camera.

In Kdenlive, it's very jittery and movement of titles looks unprofessional. I'll post some videos soon comparing the two.
Comment 4 Wegwerf 2016-08-13 06:41:57 UTC
Jesse, thanks for the clarification! I suspect that this requires either special support for the titler itself, or a universal filter/effect for motion blur.

Wegerf, possibly. I don't know the technical/back-end stuff.

This is an intro video clip I made with Blender for a client (https://youtu.be/L76AzT446KI). You'll notice when the objects and texts are rotating, there's a very pleasant, natural blur that you'd expect to see as if it was filmed with an actual video camera. This blur feels much more natural and pleasant to the eye. Without it, it would seem unnatural, which is what moving text in Kdenlive often looks like.

I'll post more examples in a bit.

Here's the same render, but with motion blur disabled: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IAGhc3gkQl4.

Is this issue moving anywhere?
motionblur on moving layers (titles and video clip layers) will make a huge difference!
but we should look at aftereffects for implementation hints: since having motionblur always on may be to heavy for a smooth preview - there must be a general toggle to disable motionblur in preview window only.

We target at providing a good video editor, animation is linked but a different job.
There is a titler rewrite from 2019 summer student, unfortunately unfinished, and not sure if this new engine would easily allow such effects.
Continue to use Blender for such tasks, it will be impossible for us to do something as good...

This video is a good example of what could be done with Kdenlive: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvPT0EWoXEE
A simple effect with few parameters. Is there a possibility of having "motion blur" in the near future of Kdenlive?

The original video was deleted and re-uploaded. New link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ANG3iMQVHVo

I made a superficial suggestion how to implement a semi-realistic motion blur (without ai network training) here:
https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=270&t=176714&p=459454&hilit=motion+blur#p459454
A paper from 2001 pretty well describes the concept.

Can anyone give hints where to grab the kdenlive/mlt source code architecture? does it even support such effects?
For example frei0r project does describe itself as too simplistic.

Kind regards
Dom
