Description Unknown 2015-09-22 04:46:58 UTC
Specifically testing Kdenlive 15.08.1+git20150922.0224+15.10-0_amd64. I couldn't seem to get ANY transitions to work in the timeline (see video URL for examples included in bug).

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add two clips to the timeline.
2. Add a transition between them.
3.

Actual Results:
Transition seems to have no affect on clips; they play as if the transition wasn't even there.

Expected Results:
Expect the transitions to behave normally and wipe, dissolve, slide, etc. one clip into another clip.

Using Kdenlive 15.09.0 (kdenlive_15.08.1+git20150922.0224+15.10-0_amd64) on Kubuntu 15.10 x64 beta.

what happens if you change the with track from "auto" to "with track 3" ?
Comment 2 Unknown 2015-09-23 00:38:44 UTC
Roger, no effect. I tweaked all settings in the Composite transition, just to see what would happen, but nothing changed the clips in any way shape or form. It was like the transition wasn't even there.

Same when I change it to Affine, burn, difference, dodge, and all other transition choices. Doesn't matter if the clip is on top first, bottom first, transitioning to higher clip, transitioning to lower clip, or anywhere in between.

Oops, sorry to have made you loose time, I didn't find time to communicate on this:
during the last day in Randa I added this new "feature" in Kdenlive: like in Shotcut,
in master code, all tracks have composite by default to the lower tracks,
and an extra icon in the track header (poorly chosen I admit) allows to disable this per track.
The idea is to simplify the workflow with transparent clips,
then one should use pan & zoom *effect* to resize & move elements.
In my first tests this was working, but obviously there are necessary refinements.
Please let us know if it is workable like this...

The next step will be to add crossfades on the same track (still like Shotcut),
and then Kdenlive should become less surprising to newcomers...
but good old fans may have to change their habits (or we can add an option).

Many thanks again for your feedback,
cheers,

Vincent

Hi Vincent,

Thanks for your reply, sir. Before commenting on your reply, I just wanted to give a reminder that the issue in this bug isn't necessarily the composite feature, but the fact that no transitions between clips or tracks in the timeline are working at all. Wipes, dissolves, dodges, etc. none of them are currently working in 15.09.0 (15.08.1+git20150923.0031+15.10-0_amd64).

Regarding the tracks having composite enabled by default, absolutely! Super helpful! I think that'll also be much easier for the new or inexperienced users; it's one less thing they'll have to try and figure out. And yes, it's also a nice improvement to increase workflow. I also think your placement of the of the icon in the track header is great, but the icon graphic itself didn't catch my eye as something potentially related to compositing tracks. Granted, after trying it out it now it makes perfect sense, but the icon graphic might not convey the button's purpose, initially. I'd have to think about what the icon itself could look like that would give a better indication of its function. I would also recommend changing the tooltip when the mouse hovers over it to say something like "Turn Composite On or Off", or "Enable/Disable Track Composite" or something to that degree. Either way, super handy. :)

The composite function itself seems to be working (mostly) fine, with the blue screen being the only exception so far. But I'd filed a separate bug for that issue.

Looking great, guys! Keep up the good work. Would look forward to this transition bug being fixed, and I'll keep testing to iron out any wrinkles. :)

Thanks!

And my pleasure on the feedback and suggestions. I'm incredibly grateful for your team's willingness to collaborate with us filmmakers and end-users. I definitely want to do my part to help put Kdenlive on the map, even possibly make it the most widely used NLE in the Industry, or at least up there with the most popular. It's a great product, and you all work damn hard on it, and it shows. Credit where credit is due. :)

Also, same track transitions, especially if you can apply all transitions in the transition list and not just dissolve, would be a huge benefit! Great idea.
Comment 7 Unknown 2015-09-23 19:25:47 UTC
UPDATE: after some more tinkering, it looks like when the composite button is clicked and enabled on a track, the transitions don't work at all. When they're disabled, the tracks transition just fine! Everything works: Dissolve, wipe, etc.

So the bug issue is now: how to enable composite on tracks AND be able to use transitions.

Vincent,

How will "all tracks have composite by default" affect me in this situation? Possibly in my case I can just turn it off and continue as usual?

I shoot local theatre with 2 cameras and 2 audio recorders.

One camera on track 1 and the other on track 2.
One audio recorder on track 3, the other on track 4.

The timeline is about 2 hours long.
I currently add an affine whenever I want to cut to camera 2. No affine for camera 1.

The problem with using affine for the whole 2 hours and altering the opacity is that affine makes editing very slow.

@Steve, judging by its behavior in the development branch, you should very easily be able to turn off composite on the desired tracks (even all) and composite the desired clips at your discretion. :)

Jesse,
Thanks for the info.

Vincent, was testing Kdenlive 15.11.80 via the ppa you made recently, and I REALLY like the icon you chose for the composite feature in the track/timeline editor. Everything is running pretty darn smoothly, too. Nicely done. :)

Also, this issue seems to have been fixed in the 15.11.80 development version. So, I'm marking this bug as fixed. Nice work, guys!
