Description George Mason 2015-09-10 09:47:47 UTC
Hi

Running OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with Plasma 5.

Every time I run a new session I have to re-set the keyboard language to English UK using the keyboard applet - the setting appears to be set correctly in the interface but is not effective. On removing and re-adding the setting, the correct language is applied which persists for the entire session.

The system keyboard layout is correctly set to English UK.

Thanks in advance

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Reboot machine
2. Log into X, plasma 5

Actual Results:
Keyboard setting has reverted to English US

Expected Results:
Keyboard should have stayed English UK

This should work fine.

Are you sure you really use Plasma5's configuration tool, systemsettings5 ("Configure Desktop" below "Settings" in the application menu )?

The KDE4 settings (systemsettings, "Configure KDE4 Applications") do not apply to Plasma5.
You might have an old entry in the "Favorites".

I must confess I was using the "Keyboard" applet although when accessing as you mention above using systemsettings5 the settings are identical - i.e. the correct layout is displayed.

FWIW I noticed that during the install process - this is a clean install of OpenSUSE Tumbleweed with KDE as the default - that despite choosing the correct keyboard layout, the English US layout was applied.

So this is actually a bug in the "keyboard" applet?

When systemsettings5 displays the correct layout, is this after login when the layout settings are not applied correctly, or is this after you changed the layout for the running session?
It might be the "Keyboard" applet that sets a wrong layout on login.

That said, are you *really* using KDE's keyboard layout changer or KDE's "Keyboard" applet?
Or is this rather ibus?
I have heard of similar reports with ibus. Try to uninstall it, and see if setting the layout works then.

That's a bug in the openSUSE Tumbleweed installer, unrelated to KDE.
You should be able to change the system layout in the running system with YaST->Hardware->System Keyboard Layout though (although I'm not sure whether this works correctly for all layouts at the moment in Tumbleweed).

It also installs only the english translations, even if you select a different language during installation.

Moving this over to the keyboard status applet and then marking it as needs info - there's some outstanding questions.
