Description Joshua Clayton 2015-09-04 03:28:45 UTC
synching one gmail folder with a lot of mail hangs at 98%.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
The progress bar for the folder sync proceeds slowly to 98% and stops.
After this, all actions stall. I can't even open an email in a different folder such as
local sent mail.

stopping and restarting akonadi via akonadictl looks fine. No errors.
When the sync process again hits 98% and again hangs the following two lines are printed:
47642 "19180" "<CADaLNDk5FT8ENQfiMQ+++NGg3VhuiTpnQtGW0L5DMYAuDKZ27g@mail.gmail.com>"
47662 "19180" "<CADaLNDk5FT8ENQfiMQ+++NGg3VhuiTpnQtGW0L5DMYAuDKZ27g@mail.gmail.com>"

Actual Results:
kmail becomes inoperable.

Expected Results:
sync will finish, time out, explode... SOMETHING?!
1) If the process cannot continue it should not hang indefinetly
2) I should be able to access other folders even if one background process is stuck.

Something similar to this has happened several times now.
Each time the "solution" has been to wipe out ~/.local/share/akonadi, which has bad effects.
It takes a long time to sync up again, some settings are preserved, some are gone, and some, like filter settings are still there but are all screwed up.
I like kmail and I would like to help track this down so that I can continue to use it.

I recently went back and set this folder to expire old emails. I allowed kmail to delete the old emails, and on the subsequent login the problem was gone.

To me this means it is likely a problem with a too large IMAP folder.

Is there such a thing like a "too large IMAP folder"?
In my case it contains around 4000 mails.
I don't think this should be too much for kmail to handle...

I can't even abort the syncing.

By the way: reproduced under ubuntu 15.10 using kmail 5.0.1 and akonadi 5.0.51

Screenshot of syncing folder hang

I observe similar bug on Arch linux, with: akonadictl --version
Akonadi 5.3.2

Although I can work with the mail (at least those synced so far), the syncing hangs on 97% (see the attached screenshot, other accounts work in parallel). The only solution to get the mailbox synced again is to call 'akonadictl restart'.

There are about 6000 messages in the sent-mail folder.
