Hi Alex, which desktop file are you talking about?

The main desktop file (src/org.kde.cantor.desktop) has comment. The desktop files for libcantorlibs (src/lib/cantor_(assistant, backend, panel).desktop) have that too.

GenericName<>Comment<>Name with according spec, but src/org.kde.cantor.desktop now:
GenericName=KDE Frontend to Mathematical Software
Comment=KDE Frontend to Mathematical Software

Or to use GenericName shorter (GenericName is a bit long after translation for Modern Style Menu) or to write another Comment.

Sure, our scripts will identify the string was changed and the translators will fix each translation.

Not sure what problem was fixed here, but if the former string was too long for some places, many translation will still be too long.

Besides that, the Generic Name could be more generic. Something like "Mathematical Software". The user does not care if the mathematics is done by the application itself or some library.

Search for "GenericName" on https://specifications.freedesktop.org/desktop-entry-spec/desktop-entry-spec-latest.html and read the table entry.

"Frontend to Mathematical Software" is generic enough for me. It is my choice. An yes, I read the specification before change it.

If the size of the string is big to use in menu we can fix it.
