4.14.1 is very old.
Last 4.14 version was 4.14.11
It doesn't crash. So could you increase version and reopen it if you can see this crash.

Rather than go out of distro, I tried renaming the kmail2rc file.  After a 
small amount of fiddling, I think I have everything back with no crashes.
