if I recall KDE4 used to allow exiting these views with the escape key.  Regardless, it'd be good usability and functionality, specifically for the occasions when i mistakenly find myself in these views.

I'm using KDE 5.9 from a fresh install of Kubuntu 15.04

99.9% bug #347566

run "kwin_x11 --replace &" and check whether it now works as expected.
The add/remove a screen or change the reolution and try again.

Right you are sir!  That did the trick!

It does now work as expected.

I'll close this, though do let me know if I can provide more information to hone in on how the functionality was lost.

There's an analysis in the other bug (you just got attached to it)
We know what happens, but at least I have no idea why :-(
