Description PGillespie 2015-08-02 14:19:36 UTC
First: Version Numbers:

Dolphin 15.04.0
KDE 4.14.8

Kubuntu 15.04 updated to the latest Plasma 5 via PPA

Problem: When I download JPGs from my camera's DCIM folder, dolphin(?) fails to consistently generate thumbnail images in the relevant download folder, or if it does, it "forgets" them from one session to the next . Out of 30 images, I may see a thumbnail for 5 or 6.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download (copy/paste) images from camera (in which dolphin successfully generates thumbnails).
2. Disconnect Camera.
3. Access images in downloaded folder.

Actual Results:
Dolphin fails to generate expected thumbnails in download folder. However, I can use Gwenview to view JPG thumbnails, or Gthumb.

Expected Results:
Viewable thumbnails.

It occurred to me to add that Gwenview and Gthumb aren't viable workarounds. If I try to add the jpgs to KDE's WallPaper App, I'm forced to do so without the benefit of thumbnails. Can be done, but it's ugly.

Thanks for the bug report. Do you see the thumbnails in the "File Open" dialog of KWrite and other KDE applications (if you enable "Previews" in the dialog)? Is the directory where the files are stored on a "normal" internal device, or is it stored on a network share?
Comment 3 PGillespie 2015-08-09 17:12:49 UTC
Okay, thanks. I can add more detail at this point --- help narrow down the problem.

inxi -D
Drives: HDD Total Size: 1250.3GB (14.2% used) ID-1: /dev/sda model: Samsung_SSD_840 size: 250.1GB
           ID-2: /dev/sdb model: HGST_HTS721010A9 size: 1000.2GB

inxi -p
Partition: ID-1: / size: 226G used: 9.8G (5%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sda1
           ID-2: /home/storage size: 917G used: 153G (17%) fs: ext4 dev: /dev/sdb1
           ID-3: swap-1 size: 4.29GB used: 0.00GB (0%) fs: swap dev: /dev/sda2

So, the OS runs on the SSD. My ~./Pictures folder is symbolically linked to a Pictures folder on /deb/sdb

Like so: /home/storage/Stome/Pictures/

"storage" is the name assigned to /dev/sdb.

I save my camera pictures to: /home/storage/Stome/Pictures/SonyPics

A.) When I navigate to this folder using Dolphin, Gwenview or GThumb I get thumbnails of all the pictures.

B.) However, let's say I want to put one of the pictures on my desktop:

1.) Right Click on Desktop.
2.) Choose Desktop Settings
3.) Choose Open
4.) File Dialogue Window Opens. It's here that the problem occurs. I get thumbnails for only 3 or 4 photos/images out of around 30 (can send attachment) and no side pain preview when I hover over the blank previews.

If I navigate to this folder using the "Add an attachment" option on this webpage, I get thumbnails.

So the problem appears to be isolated, as far I know, to the Desktop Settings--Open Image--File Dialogue Box.

If I click on an image, without a preview, it will successfully load into the Wallpaper Window.

Just tested with kwrite. (Had to install it.) Same problem. No previews.
Comment 5 Frank Reininghaus 2015-08-11 20:05:40 UTC
Thanks. If you see the same problem in the file dialog, it's not a Dolphin issue.

One more idea: What is the size limit for previews for remote files (Settings dialog -> General -> Previews)? What happens if you increase it?
Comment 6 PGillespie 2015-08-11 20:31:53 UTC
Thanks. I'm not enough of a KDE cognoscenti to know it's KIO rather than Dolphin. I've reported other bugs and sometimes I've spent 10 or 15 minutes trying to sort through all the different components and still get it wrong.

I adjusted remote previews to 20 MB in Dolphin. The relevant photos average 6 to 10 MB. Except for 5 or 6 seemingly random photos (that also displayed before) the previews still don't appear.

Previews are stored in ~/.thumbnails ... maybe, there is something wrong in this folder? You could try to rename it to ~/.thumbnails.old and navigate to you're pictures and press F5 to see, if the thumbnails are shown with a freshly created folderstructure in ~/.thumbnails.

Just guessing ...

Is this still an issue with KDE Frameworks 5.47?
