Description Leon 2015-07-14 06:25:55 UTC
When having two DVD devices and having two DVDs or CDs with the same label, the mount points gets confused.

1. When the cd's are loaded, and the labels are the same, the listing on dolphin does not specify which drive you are clicking.

2. When clicking on the CD label to mount the device, it mounts it under /var/run/media/<user>/<label name>

3. Now when copying or working with that device, and clicking the 2nd label, it mounts the drive under the same directory label.

Dolphin now has no clue what the directory listing is for which label.

suggestion is to add the device name in brackets (eg. /var/run/media/<user>/<label>(sr<dev nr>) and also ensur dolphine uses the correct address when copying and switching between multiple installed DVD drives.

Thanks for the bug report. Do you see the same issue in the file dialog of, e.g., KWrite?
Comment 2 Leon 2016-08-16 12:49:00 UTC
This condition is improved. it handles labels of duplicate values between two mounted drives much better. For DVDs, if the DVD is released without 'releasing it' or unmounting it, a duplicate name is created on the view panel when a new DVD is put in with the same label (or the same DVD is re-inserted). This still causes a minor confusion in the apper application.

Drive listing as from gnome disk utility

Details on which device is labelled could be added in brackets, eg:
ADATA
(2Gb Ut165 USB2FlashStorage)

When unmounting a drive, it is removed from the listing. but when unmounting the last drive, it remains on the listing but having the icon change from green (mounted) to red (unmounted). It should either also disappear from the list, or the ejected drives should become red (unmounted).

Hi Leon,

Do you still have that issue?
If yes, could you please clarify what and when exactly happens focusing on one problem for now?

DUAL DVD/CD LABELS:
- The handling of the Dual DVD labels is improved. but I will have to retest DVD/CD handling, which I will do asap.

DUAL USB MEMORY DRIVE LABELS:
Attached is a screen shot of two usb memory sticks that I labelled the same for this explanation.

The suggestion is as follows:
- The internal drives all show their size. the usb drives do not. suggestion is to keep the standard as per internal drive display, eg:
16Gb SSD (<LABEL NAME>)

- The second problem with that is then as follows
16Gb SSD/RAM (USB STICK)
16Gb SSD/RAM (USB STICK)

Suggestion to overcome and present quick visual queues to which drive you are working with, or wish to unmount the incorrect one (without having to click on it to list content):
- Have a tooltip hover over the drives on mouseover to display the make/model

Sometimes, when reformatting a drive (using gnome-disk-utility) and using the same label the old references will stick around until the drive is removed. there will be a duplicate reference then in the listing. but it does not adversely affect performance on dolphin. it will access the correct drives and not become confused. There may just need to be an update on the screen display for that.

So in summary, the initial problem of DUAL DVD/CD labels fixing I will need to test and confirm.

The rest of the dual label issues concerning pluggable disks on the dolphin display panel is simply cosmetics or enhancements to improve user experience and is not a bug as such (I think) I will leave it to the developer's discretion to follow-up on that or not.

Ok, it makes sense.

In order to keep the ticket clean, could you please raise a new one regarding displaying usb drives with the same label (with severity as wishlist as it's not really a bug).

Mixing and adding various things in one ticket is something we're trying to avoid here (in any bug raising system in general), as it keeps things a little bit more messy.

Regarding original issue - test it when you have a time and let us know here, please.

@Leon, thanks for taking the time to report & update this issue. Have you been able to re-test this bug with a newer version of Dolphin?

I upgraded my PC from F23 to Fedora27. Unfortunately I found the 2nd DVD player now broken. Allow me to replace it, and test it then on the F27 dolphin version.
Will revert back asap.

I must mention it, but recent problems in the Fedora 28 kernels caused continious reboots on the machine which subsequently caused a disk failure. The machine was rebooting for hours and I think I caught it too late. due to the vast amount of problem on the f28 release I simply did not have time to check this bug items again. I am going to move to Manjora when I get a new disk and see if I can replicate the problem with dual labels on it there. but I have just been having issue after issue from F28. I am scared to to move to F29.

If someone has the time to take two DVDs with identical labels, and place it into a PC which hosts two DVD Readers, then they can re-open the bug if it still is causing a conflict in the dolphin views and mount drives. That is the suggestion I leave this item with.
