Experience the same with Sonnet 15.13.0 / Kate 15.08.0 (Arch Linux) and German Umlauts:
Correct words marked as incorrect in on the fly spellcheck. Suggestions show a questionmark-character (see attachment). Using dictionary "Deutsch / Deutschland".

Strangely enough, when I activate automatic recognition of language ("Automatische Erkennung der Sprache aktivieren" in German), Words with "ä", "ü" etc. are no longer marked as wrong, but then I get a lot of false negatives.
