Description Rafael Linux User 2015-06-15 23:06:16 UTC
This is a long time ago bug. I am suffering this issue since KDE 4.10 version and still is present in Plasma 5.10. I usually suspend my PC but when I wake up it, screen is corrupted (see attached captured screen). I need to disable desktop effects (Alt + Shift + F12) and the screen is showed right. I can even enable desktop effects again and the problem doesn't appear ... till I wake up again from suspend.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Suspend to RAM my PC
2. Wake up from suspend

Actual Results:
Screen is fully corrupted

Expected Results:
To see the screen without corruption

Graphic card: Nvidia
This issue is happening in:
- OpenSUSE 13.1 and 13.2
- KDE 4 and Plasma 5

The only way to have a "clean" screen after wake up is to disable desktop effects (and can enable them again).

Corrupted screens after wake up from suspend

I forgot to mention I have two monitors connected (extended desktop, not cloned).

I just migrated on Plasma 5.3.1 at Gentoo Linux and started to have this weird bug.
At 50% chance after resume from suspend I see corrupted blinking screen, see video: https://youtu.be/sBLNYe061e8
I can't login or type password. The weird thing is I can see that through corrupted lock screen I can see part of my desktop.
I used KDE4 on the same laptop and never saw resume problem during 2 years.
Would appreciate for any hints how to diagnose this problem
My configuration:
kernel 4.1
Plasma 5.3.1
Nvidia-drivers 352.21

Also would like to add sometimes I get the same behavior when disconnect second monitor or just close the lid

Did you try the <Alt + Shift + F12> workaround or how do you get access again to yuo screen?

Rafael,
<Alt + Shift + F12> didn't work for me. What worked is to switch to console session and back using <Ctrl-Alt-F1> or either resume and suspend again.

I found another bug which looks the same https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=344326
Comment 53 says there is a commit to kwin 5.4 which should fix this error.
Comment 9 Rafael Linux User 2015-07-09 07:28:47 UTC
Yes Sergei, it's very similar. It's curious the fact that "Disable desktop effects" (<Alt> + <Shift> + <F12>) works for some others too (not your case) and we all use Nvidia cards (GTX 650 in my case).
Comment 10 Marco Martin 2015-11-25 10:38:48 UTC
probably upstream driver issue
Comment 11 Thomas Lübking 2015-11-25 15:22:06 UTC
Does anybody still encounter this on 5.4?
Otherwise it's bug #344326 for pretty much sure.

> <Alt + Shift + F12> didn't work for me.

SHIFT+Alt+F12 by default toggles the compositor. If it does for you (you could have mapped the shortcut somewhere else) and the visual artifacts remain even WITHOUT compositing, and are NOT limited to a particular client (eg. the desktop is broken, but kwrite is fine), that's something between the driver and the X11 server.

@Rafael, there's no "Plasma 5.10" (for the next few years ;-)
5.10 refers to the frameworks version (which is now at 5.16) while the next plasma workspace release will be 5.5 and is scheduled for early december this year.

I'm sorry about my mistake, Thomas. In fact, I wrote in the form:
> This issue is happening in:

> - KDE 4 and Plasma 5"

Anyway, actually this problem is not so severe with OpenSUSE 42.1 + Plasma 5. Now is reduced to noise inside windows (no animation like before) but I must disable compositor to remove that noise (I will attach some capture today).
Comment 13 Thomas Lübking 2015-11-26 13:44:33 UTC
No need to be sorry, KDE versioning is a mess (but shht... don't tell anybody I said that ;-)

What's relevant to know is whether you're already on 5.4 and still encounter such (or altered, new screenshot, please) issue since there we should have a usable workaround. (Determines whether this is a different bug or just a dupe of known bug #344326)

Still getting this on 5.6.3. Manjaro 15.12, all the current updates. Nvidia 660, ASUS G75VW laptop. Happens on both SLEEP and HIBERNATE. Sometimes black screen 10%, mostly scrambled screen 90%. Also occasionally happens after playing games. Had the "black borders" bug but it seems to have went away on the second 5.6.2 update from Manjaro. Doubt any of this helps, just posting to "bump" the issue.
