Description dancingmadrb3 2015-06-02 05:36:05 UTC
Okay I am unsure what category this fits in, I tried to narrow it to a display issue but for some reason the search came up with nothing so if this is in the wrong section I apologize but this issue is driving me nuts and please move this issue to its appropriate section.
In any case here is my issue and it is on every distro with plasma 5
you see I have a Samsung 19 inch LED TV that I use as a monitor for my machine and I have to connect it to my HDMI port as it lacks the older style connections like DVI and VGA.
Now this would not be a problem except for some reason if I switch it off and later power it on Plasma 5 doesnt like it and I have to restart my computer.
Now this TV works with KDE4, Gnome, Mate and every other desktop and display manager under the sun but not plasma 5 for reasons unknown.
And its not just isolated to the latest plasma 5 version, if I use say Kubuntu 14.10 as opposed to say opensuse tumbleweed its the same issue even with clean config files.
I even tested this out in a fresh setup on my second hard disk and its the same story, there are no config file conflicts nor any other nonsense that could cause this, I have not tried this in 32bit but it sure as heck an issue with 64bit.
I am using openSUSE 13.2 64bit gnome edition right now but its the same story on the KDE version and am using the gnome edition to verify that openSUSE is also effected by this bizarre bug.
Its not like i can hook a VGA cable up or a DVI to HDMI as my TV does not have an audio jack for audio input from my computer so using a jack is useless
HDMI is my only option and I dont have the money for a new TV so that is out, its a good TV and this being isolated to one DE does not justify the cost of a new unit.
But the issue with my HDMI is that my graphics card is running off the open driver on linux, I have a in built ATI HD 4200 card to work with and once again buying a new graphics card is out of the question so I have to work with what i have.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Connect a HDMI monitor to any computer with HDMI support
2. turn off Monitor
3. turn it back on and blank screen

Actual Results:
Have to restart computer And not turn tv off, very annoying as this computer is in the room I sleep in.

Expected Results:
the screen goes back to desktop without restarting my computer

It has a cousin in the XFCE world:
https://bugzilla.xfce.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11107
One issue i face when I use that instead

Hello anyone?

This is a MAJOR ISSUE here, I REFUSE to use plasma 5 until this is fixed!
Comment 2 Daniel Vrátil 2015-06-04 12:11:10 UTC
Have you tried enabling the screen manually from the Display Configuration option in System Settings in Plasma?

What does "have to restart computer" mean? Does Plasma (or the whole system) freeze and you have to cold-reboot your system? Or is it just that after reboot the HDMI screen starts automagically working again?

Please provide output from command "kscreen-console bug" (run it in terminal like "kscreen-console bug > output.log", then upload the output.log file here with the HDMI connected (and working), and then once again after re-connecting the HDMI (and getting blank screen).

Meaning I have to restart my whole computer each time I turn off my monitor, exactly as I said unless you cannot understand plain english:

I turn monitor off and back on again and NOTHING!

I turn the monitor on and blank screen nothing comes up and my montor says the generalized "cannot connect to monitor"
So currently the only way to get my display back is to restart my whole computer.

Here is my log:

And I did try to configure my monitor via the control panel and no effect.

I mean how much more plain English do I need to put in before you get it through your head? all I do is turn the stupid monitor off and later when I'm ready to use my computer again I get a blank screen I can't type in anything I can't see anything I can't do anything except for stare at a blank screen the only way out is too hits Control Alt backspace but even that doesn't seem to work so the only way to get anything to again is to reset my whole computer to get back my display. how much more clear must I be?
must I speak in baby talk next or do a dick sees Jane type post?

Please avoid such language in bugreport. It's not contributing anything to bug report in general and violates the KDE code of conduct.

I'm just frustrated, I just want the issue fixed but until it is I guess I will be using another desktop environment for the next several years because plasma 5 is good at everything else but not with my monitor. perhaps gnome shell is my future for the next 3 years after all it took kde4 that long to actually be workable

I just don't get what was so not understandable about my initial post, I stated what my issue is plain as day so I don't know what further context I can bring
