Description Robin Green 2015-05-08 09:22:18 UTC
I imported an OpenVPN config file but when I then clicked Connect on the connection, nothing happened.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. File -> Import VPN
2. OK
3. Close connection editor
4. Open connections applet
5. Click Connect button on VPN

Actual Results:
Nothing happens

Expected Results:
Connection succeeds

Connection does work with OpenVPN CLI
Comment 1 Robin Green 2015-05-08 09:34:07 UTC
If I try

nmcli connection up VPN

I get

Connection activation failed: The VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.openvpn' was not installed

It also doesn't show the next error that I get when I fix that error, which is "unknown error" (from the CLI) or in reality, key not provided (from systemd journal). I will file another bug now about the key not being imported.

I just tried to remove NetworkManager-vpnc plugin and activate my vpnc connection and I got a notification saying "The VPN service 'org.freedesktop.NetworkManager.vpnc' was not installed", so it works here. Check whether you have this notification enabled, go to system settings → notifications → Network management and enable "Failed to activate connection" notification. I probably cannot do anything regarding the next error, because it would need to be propagated on DBus.

It is enabled already as "Show a message in a popup". However, I have noticed that popup notifications, either for successes or failures, do not seem to display if the Networks "panel" is still open (if you see what I mean - I don't know the correct terminology). Maybe that is the real problem here. (Or maybe they are being displayed, but behind the Networks panel so I can't see them? Just a guess.)

Do you get notifications from other applications? Run: dbus-monitor "sender='org.freedesktop.Notifications'" and try to invoke some notification and send me the output.
