KRDC uses FreeRDP for RDP support. Please try to connect with xfreerdp from a termin. Can you reproduce it?
Comment 2 Miguel Minervini 2015-04-02 21:47:09 UTC
It works fine when I use xfreerdp via the terminal. No blank screen.

Can you still reproduce this issue?
I can't see any reason that you failed to connect to remote desktop.

If you still can reproduce this issue, could you use "kdebugdialog" and checks "krdc(rdp backend)", and then run krdc in a terminal. It'll output some logs on the screen and paste the log here.
Thanks.

I am connecting via RDP to a Windows 7 pro system on a domain; I am getting this after the connection drops several times and I reconnect in quick succession. I tried using GDB and kdebugdialog but I'm not getting anything out of; possibly b/c I run Arch. Once KRDC gets the black screen, it will not recover; I can wait or completely kill KDRC but it wont resolve. If I use the same xfreerdp command, then I have no problem. KDRC seems to be very sensitive to any network latency (although only 1 gigabit switch sits between the systems). Previous version did experience from time-to-time disconnections, but nothing like version 16.

This behaviour did not occur when running version: kdenetwork-krdc-15.12.0-1-x86_64
Currently running: krdc-16.12.3-1-x86_64

Steps:
1. Connect
2. krdc disconnects after 30sec-5min
3. Re-connect
4. krdc disconnects after 5-30sec
5. loop 3 & 4, for perhaps 2-3 iterations
6. connection with black screen
7. disconnect
8. retry krdc however you want
9. run xfreerdp with same command directly -works great

debug log when error is happening

So a little more detail. KRDC connected then was instantly disconnected, next login got black screen. Using xfreerdp directly also gets black screen after login screen (IE: can see to login and enter password, when desktop should load, get black screen). Captured xfreerdp with debug log.

This appears to be a Windows bug. They do make one recommendation, which i'm not sure if xfreerdp gives such an option, Disable Bitmap Caching. Rebooting my system did not resolve the black screen issue, but rebooting windows did. Found this page after; however the newest version of krdc seems to excite this problem.

1. Press CTRL + ALT + END or CTRL + ALT + FN + END on laptops. This calls Task Manager and in most cases you’ll immediately see the Desktop.
2. If only Task Manager but no Desktop appears try running Explorer from Task Manager: File > New Task > Explorer.exe
"
Comment 7 AceLan Kao 2017-04-03 12:10:55 UTC
Yes, xfreerdp comes with bitmap-cache option.
You can try adding "/bitmap-cache:false" in "Extra options:" box in krdc to see if it helps.
Comment 8 Glenn 2017-04-03 16:22:10 UTC
Thank you. That option seems to have prevented the black screen issue; however KRDC still closes the connection very frequently (every 15-30 minutes). So I still think KRDC is more sensitive than xfreerdp is; and that may need to be looked into. With that option and behaviour documented I think this can be confirmed and closed. Were the logs any help in determining when the screen is completely blank and say just calling drop cache automatically?
Comment 9 Glenn 2017-04-03 16:40:12 UTC
ok, so clearly it was just waiting for me to post after what I thought was seeing the error. Then within the hour BOOM black screen of RDP death! The windows tips I found earlier were no help.

Thank you for reporting this issue in KDE software. As it has been a while since this issue was reported, can we please ask you to see if you can reproduce the issue with a recent software version?

If you can reproduce the issue, please change the status to "REPORTED" when replying. Thank you!
Comment 11 Glenn 2022-11-04 15:50:14 UTC
I don't have any windows systems to RDP to any longer. It's been so long closing is probably fine.
