I recently upgrade from KWin 4.11 to KWin 5.2.1 an notice some regression, that large window (say 3830x 2160 pixel size) is quite slow to redraw(animated or playing a video). there is absolutly nothing ralated to CPU/GPU performence. just disable compositing and they are smooth again. having compositing off is not acceptable. I guess the driver some how choose to do vram -> system ram copying when the compositor request texture from XPixmap and upload that image *again* to vram. that operation is no noticable on avarage customer screens, say 1080p, but people use larger monitors will notice the difference. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. play a video 2. zoom the window to very large size , say 3840x2160 ( actully very normal size on 2160p screens) 3. toogle the compositing Actual Results: OK, running xcompmgr and it does not have the same problem KWin had! So there is obversly something wrong in KWin Compositor
Sorry for the trouble again. The lagg is only happens when using EGL binding, not GLX. I happen to accidentaly make KWin using EGL. change to GLX solved the problem. should I makark it INVALID or change the bug description to contain EGL ?

EGL lacks Texture From XPixmap extension, and that's the reason.
Can you try to disable strict binding (w/ EGL)? in ~/.config/kwinrc, [Compositing] group, add GLStrictBinding=false NOTICE that this will cause texture glitches on at least GLX and newer MESA (so remove the key afterwards), but it might give a hint on the performance issue (if that should stop) There's not to many ways how EGL could have been enabled but either - you altered the config (mouse wheel on resp. combobox?) or - you added an environment variable KWIN_COMPOSE - the distro altered the defaults (in code or by a global config file)
The option to select EGL got removed as it was in general too broken on most systems. It's still possible to use EGL by setting the env variable or manually editing the config file, but one is on own risk then.
