I chose Maildir resource as a component, cause the error message relates to it. I am aware that it may be a state synchronisation issue between KMail, Akonadi server and maildir resource. So feel free to reassign.

As reported in bug #345084 (kmail´s message list view gui slows down moving thousands of mails in local maildir extremely) I moved a few ten thousand of mails with KMail from one local maildir file to another.

Reproducible: Didn't try

Steps to Reproduce:
Copied from the other bug report on how I have done it:

1. Have a local maildir folder with about 60000 mails as source
2. Have a local maildir folder with about 12000 mails as destination.
3. Move about 20000 or 30000 of mails from source to destinations in three or four steps
   - Select first mail
   - Select last mail you want to move with shift click
   - Drag to other folder and select move.

Do it in these three different ways: 
1. Have source folder in usual threading view by activity.
2. Have source folder in flat date view.
3. Immediately switch to another folder after you started the move operation.

Actual Results:  
Lots of notifications that Akonadi couldn´t move a mail file. And the following in .xsession-errors:

Expected Results:  
No error messages whatsoever. I am just moving mails. There has been no filesystem errors or anything like that. Its all good. And so no reason for error mesages.

What I bet may have happened here:

I may accidentally told KMail to move some mails twice. Then Akonadi may have moved them already on the first move operation and didn´t find them anymore on the second move operation.

I suspect this, cause I do not see that any mails are missing or lost.

My expected results if my assumption is true are clear:

Best: I am not able to move the same mails twice. They are immediately grayed out for selection. Currently they aren´t and it takes quite some time till they are.

Second best: There is no error message and the move is just done once.

Anything else is inconsistent to the user.


I can reproduce something like this on move operations of single mails as well. If Akonadi is busy with something else (or it self, who knows), even such a single mail move operation doesn´t take place immediately and the mail is not grayed out either to indicate that it is in the process of being moved. Then I am sometimes unsure, whether I moved it already and thus move it again. Then I get the same error.

I know getting this asynchronous stuff right can be challenging, but I think its important to give immediate feedback in KMail GUI in move and delete cases. Do not let the user guess whether KMail received the command and is really processing it. Maybe thats something for Akonadi Next, but I think its very important to have this.

This bug has never been confirmed for a KDE PIM version that is based on KDE Frameworks (5.x). Those versions differ significantly from the old 4.x series. Therefore, I plan to close it in around two or three months. In the meantime, it is set to WAITINGFORINFO to give reporters the oportunity to check if it is still valid. As soon as someone confirms it for a recent version (at least 5.1, ideally even more recent), I'll gladly reopen it.

Please understand that we lack the manpower to triage bugs reported for versions almost two years beyond their end of life.

Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.1 aka 15.12; preferably much more recent), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
