Description notengobattery 2015-03-09 03:08:19 UTC
It's long time ago that I saw this problem, in both laptops I had: a Sony Vaio (death) and a Lenovo Ideapad Z710; and still there.

If you use KCM for the touchpad control, it's a excellent feature disable the touchpad while typing, as in Windows.

If you have disabled this option, then you probably write text in other place that you don't desire because you accidentally touched the touchpad (trying to reach the TYGHVB letters in QWERTY keyboards). The palm detection feature is pretty good.

However, if you enable the "Disable touchpad when typing" in the KCM settings module, the feature won't work at all unless you disable the "Disable taps and scroll only" option.

But, if you disable such option, then every time that you press the control key (I.E. Ctrl+V) the touchpad will be permanently disabled/enabled unless you press the key again. If such option is enabled, the touchpad will move, but the taps will and scroll will be disabled unless the Ctrl key is pressed again.

That means: if the "Ctrl key cycle" is in "Disabled", your touchpad is pretty much unusable, and if is in "Enabled", the feature does nothing.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Go to KCM in Settings
2. Enable "Disable when typing"
3. Type some stuff wile you tap the touchpad.
    a. Expected: Tap won't work.
    b. Result: Taps works.
4. Paste some text or just press Ctrl.
    a. Expected: Without changes.
    b. Result: If the taps/scroll were enabled, then will be disabled, and viceversa.

5. Stop typing.
6. Go to KCM and disable "Disable taps and scroll only"
7. Type some stuff
    a. Expected: Touchpad completly disabled for some shor time.
    b. Result: As Expected.
8. Press the Ctrl Key
    a. Expected: Without changes
    b. Result: Touchpad completly disabled unless Ctrl key is pressed, and viceversa.

Actual Results:
The actual results are mixed with the Steps as there are 2 ways to reproduce:
See 3.b; 4.b; 7.b and 8.b

Expected Results:
The expected results are mixed with the Steps as there are 2 ways to reproduce:

Using Plasma 5, Kubuntu Vivid (beta 2), Lenovo Ideapad Z710 with those "new" touchpads:

But, I've saw it in ArchLinux, Plasma 4.1x, and in a Sony SVE:

Hello! This bug report concerns the Synaptics version of the Touchpad page, which is no longer supported in Plasma 6. Can you please see if the issue still happens when using Libinput? If so, please change the status back to "REPORTED." If not, go ahead and change it to "RESOLVED FIXED", or let the bot do it automatically after a month. Thanks!
