Description illumilore 2015-02-20 20:14:04 UTC
After switching to plasma5, there is no longer any options for screensavers or screensaver configurations

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 Rex Dieter 2015-02-21 12:37:49 UTC
I think that's by design currently, you can read some of the reasons in this g+ thread,

Comment 2 illumilore 2015-02-21 17:23:49 UTC
"I think that's by design currently, "

That's what the bug is about.
Comment 3 David Edmundson 2015-02-21 17:25:06 UTC
I was confirming it is by design.

I can confirm there isn't a screensaver and it won't be coming back.

Sorry.

go look at that post he linked to. Everyone wants a screensaver on the comments. Look at http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2011/04/rethinking-screensavers/
He is factually incorrect about lcds not suffering from burn in and he ignores plamsa tvs. The leaking data that he mentions still happens in plasma5, so what's the point of removing it when what he says would be fixed by removing it still happens. Look at every other OS and WM out there, and tell me how many don't support screensavers.
Comment 5 David Edmundson 2015-02-21 17:36:37 UTC
We support the screen turning off.
Comment 6 illumilore 2015-04-06 19:15:35 UTC
The screen turning off isn't working properly in 4.14.6
Comment 7 David Edmundson 2015-04-06 19:48:21 UTC
Please open a bug under plasma4 then.

Reopening as "no screensaver comes with plasma5" is just going to get confusing.

Maybe this could be turned into a wishlist entry? I really miss the screensavers and I don't need a lock screen.

I didn't use the screensavers to save my hardware but my mind ;). They remind me of stopping work, don't stare on the screen so concentrated, and it is very relaxing to just sit and watch the movements, letting your mind flow, get new ideas etc. Maybe something similar could be added which allows to disable the lockscreen and use something more funny, relaxing, instead? If you don't want to support own screensavers you maybe can re-implement the option to use xscreensavers instead of the lock? Not everything has to be truly useful, if so, you could also get rid of the games (no, that's no proposal!).

Martin Gräßlin wrote on his blog http://blog.martin-graesslin.com/blog/2011/04/rethinking-screensavers/ "Nowadays screen savers are used to indicate that the screen has been locked. It is a way to animate the screenlocker." And that's (IMHO) a wrong assumption, screensavers are not used to *lock* the screen or show that it is locked. They are for entertainment. There were a lot of nice savers in KDE 4 and it really is a pity they all are gone now without any chance to see them again.
Comment 9 Janet 2015-05-13 15:43:47 UTC
Maybe it could be possible to use the xscreensavers as a "wallpaper" for the screen lock to make that lock a little more relaxing and useful for the users that don't need a lock? Locking the screen (IMHO) only is needed in a multi person environment - the single home user seldom does need it, why should I lock out myself? Automatic screen locking just makes aggressive - the contrary of what a screensaver does.

everything "Martin Gräßlin" wrote in that blog is wrong. LCD screens are capable of static screen damage, I have seen it happens and google backs me up.

>"Nowadays screen savers are used to indicate that the screen has been locked."
Does he have any data to back that up?

>"The compositor can ensure that the screen is blanked correctly and not leaking information."
He's apparently done that already and guess what? I have already seen the screenlocker leaking data in kde5.

Just turning off the screen isn't an option either, as fluorescent backlit displays suffer from being turned off/on. The life expectancy of the backlight goes down as they cycle more. www.eco-shiftpower.com/PDF/white-paper.pdf

This is a bug that can therefore cause hardware damage and I have seen no user polling that indicate that users would actually want even further reduced functionality in kde5.

If you want xscreensavers, install and set up xscreensaver.
We're not preventing you from running things

Screen savers won't come back. I'm sorry. But you are free to run xscreensavers and according to the author of xscreensaver it's also more secure than anything we could implement.
