Description Rajinder Yadav 2015-01-26 22:59:34 UTC
i have a wireless mouse which will stop working at random times. i've tried another wireless mouse and the same thing will happen with it. when this happen i have to unplug my mouse receiver from the usb slot and plug it in and they the mouse continues to works fine.

there is a off/on switch on the mouse using it does not reset the connection, i have to manually unplug the wireless receiver from the usb slot. this leads me to belive somehow the system is losing connection or awareness of the usb mouse.

this also happen once at the login screen, before i logged into the system

this problem never existed in kde with the previous version of kubuntu.
it's not a problem with the mouse as i've tried 2 wireless mouse and the same thing will occur.

the particula mouse i have is: GearHead optical 2.4Ghz wireless

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. turn on pc
2. use pc for sometime,
3. mouse will stop working, sometime within 1 min, somethings at the login screen
4. unplug/plug usb receiver
5. mouse is working

Does this also happen when using other desktop environments? You can use a Live CD to boot into GNOME, Unity, or XFCE.
Comment 2 Rajinder Yadav 2015-01-27 00:16:41 UTC
I only use KDE from Kubuntu, don't got time to try others desktop environments.

are you suggesting that might not be an issue with kde which implies it's a problem with linux?
Comment 3 Christoph Feck 2015-01-27 00:19:22 UTC
Exactly. I doubt KDE is able to make your mouse stop. It could be a kernel or X11 issue.
Comment 4 Rajinder Yadav 2015-01-27 01:56:02 UTC
Are your certain this is the case or are you guessing?

1) Do you know how the mouse is detected by kde
2) who is responsible for the mouse software on the team?
you need to find this out first and then investigate further.
i don't want this bug dismissed and closed prematurely.

is there some way for me to check/help with system utilities on my side to help?

can you answer what happens when something is plugged into the usb port, what is responsible for detecting the device? if it's the kernel, then how is this reported back to kde system?
Comment 5 Christoph Feck 2015-01-27 03:05:52 UTC
The udev infrastructure is responsible for detecting USB devices via kernel socket events. The X server then maps those to core pointer events and moves the mouse pointer. KDE applications receive mouse events from the X server via the X11 libraries, which (again) use sockets for the communication.

Yes, see comment #1.

What I meant was, when the mouse stops working, is there something I could do like type in the terminal to look at some system setting, reload a module or have some monitoring utility running in the background so when my mouse stop working I can use my keyboard to switch focus and look at something.

If not this, then is there some system log file i could look at that might help detect when/if the mouse or related software module is getting deactivated.

the mouse problem is random and I need to get stuff done so playing with a live CD doesn't work for me to help with diagnostic.

Yes, there are certainly tools such as "udevadm" or "lsusb" or others to debug this, but describing these tools is out of scope for this bug tracker. I suggest to ask in a forum or a mailing list, instead of in a bug tracker.

We still need the information if this is related to KDE components at all, otherwise, there is nothing we can do to resolve this.

Exacatly, there is nothing you can do!

I replaced my wireless mouse, I don't see this issue anymore, close, thanks!
