Description Noah Gregory 2014-10-17 02:18:48 UTC
The Brightness that can be changed via the battery widget changes independently of the brightness set by Fn+(F2 and F3). They both control the brightness but if, say the brightness bar on the battery widget is at 100% and we turn it down via the Fn keys. The slider stays in the same position, and the brightness control for that slider is restored once it's clicked and/or dragged. Also the Fn keys produce no OSD. The keyboard shortcuts are mapped correctly which leads me to believe they are mapped somewhere else which is causing it to go there and not through KDE. Finally it appeared once using a boot param (I forget which one) but then quickly disappeared and it never appeared again.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Hold down FN
2. Press F2, or...
3. Press F3

Actual Results:
The brightness changes w/o an OSD or change to the slider in the battery widget.

Expected Results:
The brightness changes w/ an OSD and change to the slider in the battery widget.

Kali Linux (debian based (came w/ gnome but uninstalled w/ "apt-get remove gnome-shell" then (bug came up before this) "apt-get remove gnome*" and "apt-get autoremove". Then I ran the install for KDE again just in case. I also removed gnome from the xsessions foder)
Platform Version 4.8.4 (4.8.4)

These boot params fixed it for me: video.use_native_backlight=1 video.brightness_switch_enabled=0 I am going to leave it open so people can discuss other methods.

Version 4.8 of the KDE software you are using is no longer maintained by KDE developers. If you can reproduce this issue with version 4.11.5 or newer, please add a comment.

How can I upgrade it?
Comment 4 Christoph Feck 2014-10-18 01:51:45 UTC
Please ask in a forum or mailing list of your distribution how to install newer KDE packages.

Kali Linux distribution does not really support KDE packages. The table at distrowatch does not list a kdelibs version at all for the current release. Also, the needed Qt software is not up-to-date either, see http://distrowatch.com/table.php?distribution=kali

If you are interested in running a KDE desktop, I suggest to use a distribution which officially supports KDE packages, the distrowatch page offers lots of information to compare them.
