Ah, my kmail version is 1.13.7. using kde 4.8.4. Debian _stable_

KDE 4.8.4 is no longer maintained by KDE developers. If this bug is reproducible with KDE 4.12.5 or newer, please add a comment.

The last time I upgraded from stable i was no longer able to read my emails. 
Therefore I can't help you there.
