Description Michael 2014-08-25 09:52:40 UTC
Application: kwin (4.11.10)
KDE Platform Version: 4.13.3
Qt Version: 4.8.6
Operating System: Linux 3.13.0-34-generic x86_64
Distribution: Ubuntu 14.04.1 LTS

-- Information about the crash:
- What I was doing when the application crashed:

Recently auto-upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04
Unlike other reports in this bug thread we never had problems with 12.04 with this.
Main problem while 14.04 is running is that KDE Kickoff options for shutdown, reboot and log out don't work.
shutdown -P in console works well.

For some reason the auto-reporting below says 'crash not reproducible' - in fact it is very reliably reproducible, along with logout problems above. Also the auto-reporter says this bug is similar to ones reported for older versions, which presumably have been long since fixed, therefore I persist in (re)sending it

Nonsenese about 'not reproducible':

The crash does not seem to be reproducible.

Comment 1 Thomas Lübking 2014-08-25 10:06:32 UTC
Your GL installation is broken, the loaded GL library is from fglrx (catalyst) but apparently your loading some other (vesa, radeon) driver. Since the fglrx libGL is incompatible with the mesa one, each and every OpenGL application will crash.

Check the contents of /var/log/Xorg.0.log about what X11 driver is loaded and why.
Running "sudo aticonfig --initial -f" *might* fix the setup (towards using fglrx)

----------

As for "kickoff", that's either likely a permission issue (Ubuntu not/semi using systemd nor consolekit) or networkmanager changed the hostname after the session started (for this see https://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=119788 )

In either case, it's for sure not a kwin bug, so if you cannot figure the cause directly, please file a bug against ksmserver (though I assume it's ultimately a distro bug)

----

In general, please *never* collect multiple issues in one bugreport - that's untrackable and often just closed "invalid" for this reason.

Comment 2 Michael 2014-08-25 10:31:31 UTC
Dear Thomas,

Many thanks for the prompt reply. Apologies that I reported two problems at once - as the two things appeared together I guessed that they might be related so that the info about Kickoff would help troubleshoot Kwin.

'sudo aticonfig --initial -f' produces:
aticonfig: No supported adapters detected

The Xorg log file is included below, but I think the suspect lines start from:

[ 21.751] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for fglrx
[ 21.759] (II) Loading PCS database from /etc/ati/amdpcsdb /etc/ati/amdpcsdb.default
[ 21.802] ukiDynamicMajor: failed to open /proc/ati/major
[ 21.803] (EE) No supported AMD display adapters were found
[ 21.804] (II) [KMS] drm report modesetting isn't supported.
...

I hope this makes sense ...
Sincerely
Michael

You're falling back to the VESA driver, ie. no acceleration at all (and libGL points the incompatible fglrx variant)

-> What's the output of "lspci"

Comment 5 Michael 2014-08-25 11:18:44 UTC
Dear Thomas,

This didn't seem to be the case in the past. Could it simply be that we have developped a hardware fault?

Best
Michael

Please notice that you're mailing to a bugtracker - it's neither reuqired to keep quotes nor to "dear" me ;-)

> 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] RV635 [Radeon HD 3650/3750/4570/4580]

The GPU dropped out of fglrx support - there is a legacy driver, but I frankly cannot find a Ubuntu package for it in their repos.

You can however uninstall fglrx and use the radeon driver (ensure to have libdrm-radeon1 installed and not KMS -modesetting- blocked in GRUB)
Comment 7 Michael 2014-08-25 12:02:39 UTC
How do I check / do the KMS -modesetting- ?
Comment 8 Michael 2014-08-25 12:04:09 UTC
Does 'the GPU dropped out of fglrx support' mean that fglrx no longer
supports the GPU, or that the GPU is broken?
Comment 9 Thomas Lübking 2014-08-25 12:12:16 UTC
The recent fglrx versions do no longer support the GPU.
The HW is probably fine (if it was before the update, it will still be)

Depending on whether you're using GRUBv1 or GRUBv2, the kernel parameters are set in /boot/grub/menu.lst or /etc/default/grub - things that say "nomodeset" or "modeset=0" are what you do NOT want to be there.
Comment 10 Michael 2014-08-25 12:26:09 UTC
Thank you! The problem seems to be resolved, in that the screen now looks better and there is no obvious Kwin error message on logging in. I wouldn't know what the proper diagnostic is to confirm this.

> I wouldn't know what the proper diagnostic is to confirm this.
/var/log/Xorg.0.log (for the loaded driver) resp. "glxinfo" (for the OpenGL acceleration)
Alternatively "qdbus org.kde.kwin /KWin supportInformation", but if "glxgears" and tuxracer run nicely, everything's pretty much ok ;-)
