Description Baconmon 2014-08-21 23:47:48 UTC
It is gwenview version 4.13.3 (This version was not available to choose from in the version-chooser thing..

So, I have 2 hard-drives I use on my laptop: The main internal one, and also an external hard-drive that is hooked-up via USB..

I use the USB hard-drive for storage, so I don't access it often, so it is usually in sleep mode most of the time.. But for some reason, any time I open an image to view in gwenview, the external hard-drive spins up, even though the image is on the main hard-drive, not the external hard-drive..

This needlessly uses up power spinning up my external hard-drive for no reason.. If I am just opening an image on the main hard-drive for a second to look at it, and then close it, that should have nothing to do with the external hard-drive..

I have a feeling that every time gwenview opens it is trying to build up giant index of every thing for its browser part.. But this is really pointless and inefficient if all the person wants to do is look at an image for a second and then close it..

Other image viewers such as ristretto can open images just fine with out turning on the external hard-drive, and it also opens faster than gwenview, probably because it isn't trying to load and build some giant index of every thing every time it opens.. I might have to use that until this bug is fixed, because it is annoying that I can't look at any of my pictures on my computer with how hearing my hard-drive start up and spin idly for no reason.. (The hard-drive is on my desk and I can always hear when it is spinning)..

I am just wondering......hypothetically if some one had 10 extra hard-drives on their computer, and opened 1 image for a second from main hard-drive on gwenview, would gwenview start up all 10 of the extra hard-drives?? That would be insane..

This also happens on my laptop with two internal hard drives (SSD and HDD). The HDD spins up when I open an image in Gwenview. It increases the hard drive wear and causes higher power consumption.

Does this still happen with a recent KF5 version of Gwenview, like 17.x?
Comment 4 Baconmon 2017-09-09 04:30:21 UTC
I literally don't even have any spinning hard-drives to test with any more.. I got rid of the USB drive I had, and now I only have an SSD in main computer and lot of SD cards..

Maybe some one else can plug a spinning USB drive in and test a recent version of gwenview..
