It is possible to set a shortcut like "Alt+E", but it is not possible to use it, because the mnemonics are always active as long as the menu is visble (if it is hidden, it will work) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. set up a shortcut like Alt+E 2. press shortcut Actual Results: an error about double bound shortcuts will appear Expected Results: it should be possible to disable the use of mnemonics Altough the use of mnemonics for menu items is common, it is a not user-friendly to predefine the hotkeys. Approaches like the HUD menus of Canonical or the Command Palette of SublimeText are nice tries to improve the way of how to execute commands. Furthermore the "Alt" key was introduced for "alternatives". So it makes more sense to use it for executing certain commands instead of open menus.
