Change the title, if you find a better one. The last time I started plasma, only the left edge of the desktop were rendered. I take a few pictures and video, so you can see the problem by yourself. I start plasma always per terminal with this command: startx /usr/bin/startkde http://i.imgur.com/hYygG4X.jpg http://i.imgur.com/doXPZZ3.jpg http://i.imgur.com/r9Ry4yN.jpg http://www.vidup.de/v/VZtUu/ Reproducible: Sometimes Steps to Reproduce: 1. Start KDE. Actual Results: You see only parts of the gui. Expected Results: You see a normal desktop. I'm not sure what component causes this bug. It could be, that kscreen is responsible. I have a multimonitor setup, but use the second monitor only sometimes. kscreen seems not to be good in storing this two types of settings: "second monitor on", "second monitor off" and switch smoothly between this two. In this case the second monitor was off (during boot, too). (In the previous boot process the second monitor was on, but not kde, only X.) Unfortunately I missed the log. Next time the bug occurs, I will attach a log. This problem is not really reproducable.
Argh, the video upload does not worked as expected. Try this one: http://www.vidup.de/v/oFWPz/
Yes this happens sometimes even when logging with sddm/lightdm.. but not really problem that one can reproduce..
Are you able to open a konsole try: DISPLAY=:0 konsole from a TTY if so can you give me the output of "xrandr -q " and "qtdiag"
Do you by any chance have a rotated screen?
*** Bug 336499 has been marked as a duplicate of this bug. ***
I never had or have a rotated screen. On a working setup the output of xrandr -q is: $ xrandr -q Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1920 x 1080, maximum 8192 x 8192 HDMI-0 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 1920x1080i 60.1 + 50.0 60.0 1920x1080 60.0 50.0 59.9 2880x576 50.0 2880x576i 50.1 2880x480 60.0 59.9 2880x480i 60.1 60.1 1280x720 60.0 50.0 59.9 1440x576 50.0 1440x576i 50.1 1440x480 60.0 59.9 1440x480i 60.1 60.1 720x576 50.0 720x480 60.0 59.9 640x480 60.0 59.9 DVI-0 connected primary 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 521mm x 293mm 1920x1080 60.0 + 120.0 109.9 99.9 59.9* 1680x1050 59.9 1280x1024 75.0 60.0 1440x900 75.0 59.9 1280x800 59.9 1152x864 75.0 1024x768 75.1 70.1 60.0 832x624 74.6 800x600 72.2 75.0 60.3 56.2 640x480 75.0 72.8 66.7 60.0 59.9 720x400 70.1 VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) The problem occurs again. This time I logged it. See the attached log (I stopped X with CTRL-C). $ xrandr -v xrandr program version 1.4.1 Server reports RandR version 1.4

The log you sent looks more like something crashing rather than an actual problem of workspace management. Adding Martin Graesslin as CC.
See the other attached log. This is a normal startup. Some crashes were caused by typing CRTL-C I think. E.g. yakuake crashes each time I close the session (known bug).

Is this still happening with newer Plasma (5.3 ideally)?
No response to comment #11, assuming fixed. If you can still reproduce this with Plasma 5.5, please reopen this report. Thanks
Sorry, I don't get it. The issue is gone since much versions. Thank you, too.
