Description Bhrgunatha 2014-06-06 04:39:11 UTC
I'm using KDE 4.13.1 under 64 bit Arch Linux.

uname -a
Linux 3.14.1-1-ARCH #1 SMP PREEMPT Mon Apr 14 20:40:47 CEST 2014 x86_64 GNU/Linux

My soundcard is an onboard HDA Intel ALC1200.
I'm not using pulseaudio, just alsa and I've encountered this problem using Gstreamer and VLC as the backend for phonon.

I generally have the master volume set to maximum (e.g. using Kmix and adjust the volume of individual apps either using their built in features or the volume dial on my speakers.
For the last two months the master volume keeps being reset to 50% of maximum - without any intervention from me.

I don't believe I've configured anything to cause this to happen. In fact I don't even know how to do that.

I haven't noticed any pattern to when it resets, or any behaviour from me to cause it.

Phonon doesn't manage the master volume really. Moving to kmix for inspection.

Do you use Skype? It has the nasty tendency to re-ajust volumes, but that can be changed in the settings.

FWIW: why don't you have pulseaudio installed? It is standard on Archlinux, there is really no reason not to use it.

I do use skype but I don't allow it to manage my audio settings. I haven't noticed any relationship between skye and the volume getting reset; it has definitely happened when I haven't been using skype.

pulseaudio has caused me significant problems in the past, so when I installed my machine, I chose not to use it and I honestly haven't found any desperate need to install it :)

Although now I've checksed and I've found that both libpulse 5.0.1 and lib32-pulse 5.0.1 are both installed.

FYI - I have kmix 4.5 installed so I've changed the version number.

Why is this marked as needs info/waiting for info?
Can someone explain what info is needed please?
Comment 5 Myriam Schweingruber 2014-06-18 08:17:30 UTC
Thanks for the information. Not installing Pulseaudio for problems "in the past" is a bad choice IMHO, there have been many improvements in the last months. And it is default on Archlinux, you really should use the default setups suggested by the distribution, there are reasons for that...

Question: Does the "volume reset" also happen, when KMix is not running? Please quit KMix (main window, Ctrl-Q), try again and report back.
