Description dik15 2014-05-09 03:12:22 UTC
Muon Application Update notifier tells me I have a security update and 5 updated packages, of which 5 were updated for security reasons. When I try to install them on Muon update manager I get this popup message, " Authentication Error - Muon Update Manager (This operation cannot continue since proper authorization was not provided). Today I switched my hard drive and video card into a Dell Optiplex 755 from an Optiplex 518 and Kubuntu still works but I got this message when I tried to install updates. I don't want to have to reinstall Kubuntu. Is there some settings I now have to change?

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Put hard drive in a different motherboard
2.Muon application update notifier says updates are available.
3.Open Muon Update Manager and try to install updates
4."Waiting for authentication" never happens.
Actual Results:
I get the Authentication Error "This operation cannot continue since proper authorization was not provided."
Under this notice it says "Waiting for Authentication."
Authentication never comes.

Expected Results:
Software Updates should have been installed.

I had an Optiplex-518 computer with no front cover and some of the back missing. I found an Optiplex-755 with no hard drive at the local Army Surplus store. I put my hard drive with Kubuntu already on it into the Optiplex-755. I got the application update notification when I first turned on the computer. I tried to install the updates then this Authentication Error tells me I cannot update my Kubuntu.

I came here to report essentially the same thing. I initially filed it against Kubuntu's Muon-updater package, but they determined it was KDE's problem. Original bug report is https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1320041 and has three attachments, hopefully something there is helpful. Original Launchpad description follows:

When attempting to install updates in muon-updater, clicking Install Updates immediately returns a dialog box stating "This operation cannot continue since proper authorisation was not provided", without first asking for a password.

Reinstalling polkit-kde-1 does not help, killing qaptworker2 does not help.

Actual behaviour: the above error message.
Expected behaviour: software asks for password, installs updates

muon-updater:
  Installed: 2.2.0-0ubuntu3.1
  Candidate: 2.2.0-0ubuntu3.1

Me-too:

On Kubuntu 12.04.4 LTS with muon 1.3.1-0ubuntu2 the problem occurs intermittently: most the time muon correctly asks for authorization, but on some days it just doesn't. Once in this state, clicking install updates never brings the authorization dialog but always the error. On the next day everything may be back to normal.

Due to the intermittent nature I cannot give steps for reproduction, but OTOH, it's not a one time failure but keeps happening at irregular intervals.

Are there any logs that I should check if authorization was attempted and failed for some reason?

Could this entry in .xsession-errors be relevant:

QDBusObjectPath: invalid path "/modules/muon-notifier"
kded(1707): The kded module name ' "muon-notifier" ' is invalid!

6-26-14 I can confirm this problem is still active. I'm using Ubuntu kde 14.10 alpha with new kde plasma 5 (neon) installed.

This sums up my problem "When attempting to install updates in muon-updater, clicking Install Updates immediately returns a dialog box stating "This operation cannot continue since proper authorisation was not provided", without first asking for a password"

73 up dates sitting in limbo as of this posting.

To be fair, if you have 70+ updates that haven't run, you can't say for sure that it hasn't been patched, because the patch could be in one of those 70 updates.

It does still exist on my system (which is fully patched).

To run updates manually on the command line:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

Thank you:

I'll give that a try. Also Firefox 30.1 was part of the update that I
quoted about. So after doing as you suggested, Firefox 30.1 should no
longer be listed as a upgrade/update.

Thanks again

Using Ubuntu 14.10 - Migrated from Mate to Kde environment.
I am a total novice but I found the suggestions at:
http://ubuntugenius.wordpress.com/2013/11/29/ubuntu-13-10-permissions-fix-this-operation-cannot-continue-since-proper-authorization-was-not-provided-halts-software-updater-shutdown-drive-mounting-dvd-playback-etc/
Useful to solve the problem. I needed restart. Hopes it helps.

Also in my case..
After i had changed my system password by recovery mode the password on muon is not requested and i have the " Authentication Error - Muon Update Manager (This operation cannot continue since proper authorization was not provided)" message.

Problem is still occurring on Kubuntu 15.04 with KDE 5.8.0 as of 4/9/2015 with all updates.
Comment 9 Clay Weber 2015-04-13 18:11:16 UTC
I am seeing the same problem here on 15.04 in Plasma 5, but only on one system (out of 3).
Comment 10 Clay Weber 2015-04-13 18:18:06 UTC
Also, of note, I do get to enter my password, but some time after during the download/installation of updates, I get the authentication error. However, it is only gui that crashes; the update does proceed and is completed.

A colleague of mine hit the same bug after an update from kubuntu 14.10 to 15.04.

I've managed to solve the "muon authentication bug" by removing the SDDM login manager and replacing it by the previous LIGHTDM. I did that after noticing that the PAM lightdm config file in /etc/pam.d/lightdm has a line stating "auth optional pam_wallet.so" which /etc/pam.d/sddm lacked, and wondering if that could be the source of the problems.

I'm still not sure, as I'm not an expert on sddm or pam, but the fact is that replacing sddm with lightdm solved the problem, and perhaps this works for others too.
Comment 12 Darren Peets 2015-05-22 05:38:17 UTC
On my system, the upgrade to 15.04 actually fixed it.
Comment 13 Jonathan Beebe 2015-08-08 08:27:43 UTC
I've run into this as well and have not been able to fix it. I'm running 15.04 (upgraded from 14.10). I'm running a vanilla Ubuntu installation but used the Kubuntu backports ppa to install plasma 5.3.1.

I tried install polkit-kde-1 to no avail. I verified that polkit-kde-authentication-agent-1 is a running process.

I'm not using a login manager. I have `startkde` in my ~/.xinitrc and that's how I enter the plasma 5 environment.

The problem occurs with all muon apps (muon, muon-discover, muon-updater). It says authentication failed but does not ask for a password.

Hope this helps.

I'm using Kubuntu 15.10
Can't install anything from Muon Software Center - this error keeps stopping the process.
I've had it block updates too
then I'd apt-get update and that would work

I can confirm that here we are two years after the initial report and many people have this problem (including me). I have no idea what is triggering it since I was not trying to update anything until I tried to update the updater. There is no process running with "PackageKit" as its program. My KDE version is 5.5.4.
Comment 18 Victor Suarez 2016-03-30 19:40:56 UTC
I found a "solution" in my case: leave (logout) from my session and open again a new session (login).

In the second session work muon-update, kcm_sddm,...

SDDM problem as said by Orestes Mas?
Comment 19 Janet 2016-04-04 05:02:11 UTC
Can confirm this on Netrunner 17 (based on Kubuntu 15.10) - but only on one system out of two.
Comment 20 Aleix Pol 2016-11-29 14:48:28 UTC
This code doesn't exist anymore, now we're going through PackageKit. Please try a supported KDE/Plasma version.
