Description andre.buesgen 2014-05-06 20:34:29 UTC
There is no instant messenger listed when i want to set a default messenger.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Open system settings
2.go to default applications
3.try to choose a instant messenger
3.It wont work because there is none listed
Actual Results:
There were no options listed

Expected Results:
Options like Kopete, pidgin, etc...

I installed kde as a second desktop environment

Are the applications you expect here (Kopete, Konversation, KDE Telepathy) actually installed? Note that pidgin is not a KDE application, I doubt it registers itself as a KDE IM service.

Yes, they are all installed and I can use them. But I can't set them as default. Is there a way I can register them as a KDE IM service?

Does it work if you start one of those applications? From what I see, communication is done via D-Bus, so registration might only happen once the applications are running.

I started all these applications and I also have Kopete configured. I even reinstalled the whole Kubuntu-desktop packages but it didn't work.

Pali / Eike, any idea how KDE IM registration is supposed to work?
Comment 6 Eike Hein 2014-05-29 06:16:14 UTC
Not really, but here's a few data points I can offer:

- We used to install *.protocol files to register us for irc:// URLs.
- These days we carry x-scheme-handler MIME type declarations for the above in our .desktop file.
- We also have X-KDE-ServiceTypes=DBUS/InstantMessenger in the .desktop file.
- We implement the KIMProxy/KIMIface D-Bus interface, which is a remnant of a KDE 3 system that I don't think ever really got ported to KDE 4.

It seems to me that these days each client connects to a different network; there isn't really a universality here the way there is with email.

What does it actually mean to set an instant messenger as the default one? What other software would read this data and send data to the specified default IM client? How would this work?
