Description TOM Harrison 2014-05-06 16:00:40 UTC
amarok will has some memory leak when music switch.
although it will free, but it seems not complete free.

I Have see the amarok eat about 600 MB.

Reproducible: Always
Comment 1 TOM Harrison 2014-05-07 02:40:46 UTC
just continuous change the music, than it will continuous increase the memory usage.

I am using the mp4 with video as pure music.
Comment 2 Myriam Schweingruber 2014-05-07 08:38:41 UTC
Which exact Amarok version is this? You should use version 2.8, all older ones are outdated and not maintained by us anymore.

Do you use the phonon-backend-gstreamer? (see Help menu -> Diagnostics) There is a known memory leak with the old phonon-backend-gstreamer that uses the gstreamer 0.10.x libraries, should be solved with the upcoming new one

Also: are you talking about Total Memory usage or do you talk about Shared Memory? You can see this with either top, htop or the KDE System activity tool. If it is total memory: Linux allocates free memory when it is available, so this would only be too much if it starts to swap. So what is really relevant is the shared memory part, and I very much doubt it is using more than 50 MB, even when playing

amarok version 2.8.0 kde 4.13.0

yep, I am default using the gstreamer backend. I did not like vlc backend.
this is my backend information
ii phonon-backend-gstreamer:amd64 4:4.7.1+git20140403-0ubuntu1 amd64 Phonon GStreamer 1.0.x backend
ii phonon-backend-gstreamer-common:amd64 4:4.7.1+git20140403-0ubuntu1 amd64 Phonon GStreamer 1.0.x backend icons

I see the memory usage from the ksysguard. I see the memory from it memory column.
shared memory for now is 74.8M.
the memory I see it will up to near 1G and then it auto close.

OK, then please try to use the phonon-backend-vlc instead, you will probably have to install it first, change the backend then restart KDE. Just to make sure the bug is indeed the one I suspect.

And I very much doubt you will get a shared memory going up to 1 G, I have never seen such a thing. Again, the total memory usage is irrelevant, as Linux allocates memory when there is, unlike other operating systems.

FWIW: playing here since about 3 hours now, using the vlc backend, the shared memory is at 38 M and doesn't change

sorry for late information
it seems you're right. when using vlc phonon backend. the memory increase is not occur.

this bug can be reproduce easily by continue switch music in amarok.

but I prefer using gstreamer, vlc backend seems missing some feature for amarok.

this bug can be reproduce easily by continue switch music in amarok.
