Description Barade 2014-04-27 23:14:10 UTC
The navigation panel wastes much space by putting icons for "contents", "thumbnails" etc. in vertical order. Whenever the user wants to use those categories for example to see thumbnails which could be quite useful a lot of space is wasted for those categories. They could be put above a vertical bar with thumbnails/bookmarks etc and be resized smaller or at least the bar should be resizeable (use QSplitter).

Reproducible: Always

Not going to change
Comment 2 Barade 2014-04-28 09:21:41 UTC
Could you please explain why not? In terms of usability it doesn't make sense to waste space in a GUI layout.

Because we've been developing Okular for more than 10 years and noone came up with a better solution. And I don't see you suggesting a better one, i wasn't even able to understand what you meant.

You can right-click the navigation panel, and change icon size and/or remove text labels. This way, you can save some space, which I guess is what you were trying to do with the proposed splitter.

Icons not on the side

I uploaded a screenshot of what could be done to "save space". I personally prefer to not have the icons on the side, since most of the time, pdfs are read left->right and right -> left, wasting the little bit of space means that the pdf might not fit at an ideal zoom level.

Regarding comment #5: If I had to save space here, I would click on that icon again to hide the page navigator.

That's also the reason, why the icons are not displayed above or below the navigator; they would either need to jump around when hiding the navigator, or the wasted space would even be bigger.
