With Kate set to load last-used session on startup (Settings > Sessions), if two Kate windows with the same session are open, it is not possible to launch any further instances of Kate, not even to open a different session. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. On Settings > Sessions, choose Load last-used session 2. Close all open Kate instances; restart one instance 3. Open another Kate instance (e.g., right-click task button and choose Start new instance). Choose “no” to the prompt to switch to other window instead of reopening if asked (else manually load the same session). 4. Attempt to open a third Kate session: a) Using taskbar “Start new instance” or K menu or plasma launcher b) Running kate in terminal c) Running kate -n in terminal d) Running kate -s <some_other_session> in terminal Actual Results: 4a) Error box: “KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/kate'” 4b-4d) kate exited immediately with return value 1 but no specific error message Expected Results: Same behavior as seen in step 3, or a dialog offering a choice of sessions. Or, some kind of meaningful message explaining why a third session cannot be opened.
No problem here. Please retest with the latest version. Arch Linux 64-bit Kate 16.04.2 KDE Frameworks 5.22.0 Qt 5.6.1 xcb wm

Wow, I barely even remember submitting this bug now. I had since stopped using KDE and also switched text editors, and given the amount of time that has passed plus the fact I later discovered hardware errors with my working system which might have triggered the false appearance of bugs in some cases, it's probably unlikely this issue is relevant anymore. Guess I'll close it now. :-)
