Description piedro 2014-04-20 08:22:44 UTC
actually on 4.13 final on arch 3.14.1 ...

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. open Kontact
2. choose overview (summary ... I don't know the translation)
3. open preferences - try to click or change something
Actual Results:
 - immediate crash (segfault)

Expected Results:
no crash obviously and on a more general note no baltant regressions on such a simple thing as using the preference menu - I get there might be bugs with some specific settings - but just OPENING the preferences followed by immediate crashing is just sloppy... seems like either hasn't been tested or kontact hasn't been ready at all for the nepomuk/baloo transition - either way irritating ...

At the moment (at least on my computer) there is no way to disable/hide some parts of kontact... cause that's what you do in the summary preferences ...

backtrace please.

Please add the backtrace of the crash. For more information, please see http://techbase.kde.org/Development/Tutorials/Debugging/How_to_create_useful_crash_reports

I understand your frustration, but if you add a backtrace, we can identify if this is the same crash as bug 333391, which was already fixed 6 days ago (and therefore unfortunately missed the 4.13.0 tag), or if it is a different bug.

One additional comment (sorry for the flood): Kubuntu developers had a long discussion about whether they should include 4.13.0 in an LTS release, basically at the day of its release. As far as I understand, they plan to provide future 4.13.x updates as official updates, but if you file a bug to Launchpad with a reference to this comment, they could probably supply a hotfix with the patch from bug 333391 before 4.13.1 is out.

Thanks to everyone for taking care of things! Sorry for the missing backtrace, but the crash report said it wouldn't be useful. I will check how to create useful backtraces but I have to finish stuff on a schedule, can't do it before that. RIght now I am busy with fixing things to work but I will catch up eventually.

One interesting point though:

Reluctantly I deleted my akonadi database (I had issues with a lot of double entries for mails and contacts and notes within kontact). After restarting kontact with a clean database most of these issues dissappeared. I had to reset all of the folder settings for all mail accounts and I am still trying to figure out how to clean up my notes (they suddenly tripled!) ... but the good news is:

Now I can open the kontact preferences without crash !!!

So to my understanding it seems to be a migration problem related to the entries in the mysql database for akonadi ...

thx for your efforts - keep up the ironing out,
I'll try to make a useful backtrace if it happens again,
with best regards,
piedro

Just read this:

"Arch currently doesn't offer debug packages with symbols (Feature Request). You therefore need to recompile all concerned packages with debugging symbols. See their informative document Getting Traces."

Seems to be a while untill I can do this, sry ...
