inf:// links are noit automatically detected and handled by kte-collaborative. Instead if I get such a link, I have to manually paste it into the File Open dialog in a text editor, which is not intuitive (people may not be used to writing/pasting URIs into that dialog). Reproducible: Always
"Automatically detected and handled" in what context? Where do you get the link from? A chat window? If so, I have no idea if/how that could be detected in a general way -- I'll try to find out.
In my example case I received it via email. Ideally I would be able to click the link and it would open my default text editor with the file.
Ok. I just checked, in kmail you can't click the link at all unless it's HTML (I guess). In konversation, in theory it works, it opens the link in kate but it seems to download the file beforehand instead of opening the URL so it doesn't actually work. Meh. After consulting #kde-devel it seems like in principle I can make kate the default applications for URLs starting with inf:// by using some mime-type magic. I will look.
