Description Serhiy Zahoriya 2014-03-27 00:36:29 UTC
I don't want nor like my username being generated from my name. Please allow me to type it in by myself.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
Try to register at forum.kde.org
Actual Results:
Username selection is limited to a limited list of my name parts.

Expected Results:
Ability to select custom username as on every forum I know of.

Marking severity as Grave because it is effectively for me.
Comment 1 Hans Chen 2014-03-27 01:21:13 UTC
The KDE Identity username is only for logging in and is not shown for other users. You'll be able to choose a custom display name for the forums.
Comment 2 Serhiy Zahoriya 2014-03-27 01:26:27 UTC
Ok, that's good news. I guess it would be better to add this info somewhere on the page.
Comment 3 Serhiy Zahoriya 2014-03-28 01:37:31 UTC
And where is it exactly?
Comment 4 Ben Cooksley 2014-04-01 07:50:48 UTC
Can you please clarify what you mean by "where exactly"?
When logging in for the first time, the forum will prompt you to select a display name.

1. What are the benefits of limiting this fundamental user freedom? If there are at least one, at least add the explanation to the register form.
2. Was the move to identity.kde.org automatic? My username "int_ua" is said to be taken, and I really registered with my old email account on 2013-10-06 but don't remember this nonsence with forced generation of login name. User id is 62352 AFAIU, looking at activation email. How do i get my login name now? int_ua + old email isn't working.

I have sent you an email now containing the details of your Identity account.
In terms of the benefit, usernames have to be forced as a matter of community policy i'm afraid - we're going to coming up with something slightly more convenient in the future to help ease the process though.
Comment 7 Serhiy Zahoriya 2014-04-09 19:43:05 UTC
What are the benefits of such policy then?

Thanks a lot for your effort, but it was new account details. I've replied there and added my old email.
Comment 8 Ben Cooksley 2014-04-10 08:45:43 UTC
The policy was instituted before my time i'm afraid. The primary benefit is being able to easily relate a username to a person I believe.

I've sent you an email regarding the old address.
Comment 9 Serhiy Zahoriya 2014-04-10 17:06:38 UTC
With the help of Ben I've gained access to my old username by adding old email to the new account. Thanks a lot.

I still don't see any benefit that outweighs forcing user to a specific login name. But it's not "Grave" for me anymore.

Unfortunately it is shown now at least on Phabricator.

It's shown in other web apps too. We were talking specifically about the forum when saying it's not shown to users. This bug report is for the forum.
Comment 13 Ben Cooksley 2018-10-11 18:22:13 UTC
In regards to Phabricator you are given the option when logging in for the first time to provide a username, so it can also be different (and for some people, definitely is different)
