Looks fine here (with fl ligature). Can you try to install Liberation fonts then open the file again?
Lliberation-fonts were installed here. There was an option to install liberation2-fonts, which required deletion of liberation-fonts. But the problem still persists with liberation2-fonts. Your font substitutions look really weird. Do you have installed the package that provides the n021004l.pfb font file?
(In reply to comment #9) > Your font substitutions look really weird. > > Do you have installed the package that provides the n021004l.pfb font file? That should be ghostscript-fonts-std package btw.
Created attachment 85796 [details] all installed ghostsript fonts *.pfb
ghostscript-fonts-std (9.06-18.1) was installed and I reinstalled it without influence on the fl-problem.
Albert, is there any more information you need from the bug reporter? Please set the bug status.
Not much on our side besides his freetype is broken and choosing the wrong substitutions, i suggest Ulf to either uninstall the thing that provides texgyreheros-* files or to fix their freetype configuration so he gets a Helvetica compatible font when asking for an Helvetica font. I'm tempted to mark this as wontfix but i'll leave it open just in case.
Thank you for the hint. I uninstalled texlive-tex-gyre fonts, which rectified the problem. I do not know yet, what problems I am going to encounter now.
User fontconfig configuration was returning a font without the fl ligature, not much we can do from our side.
