Description sparhawk 2014-03-19 06:50:47 UTC
I sometimes connect an external monitor to my laptop. In certain situations, the pre-existing plasmoids disappear.

1) Have only the laptop's screen enabled ---> widgets appear on the laptop screen.
2) Enable the external monitor, and select it as primary.
3) External monitor on the left of the laptop screen ---> (previous) widgets appear on the external screen. (Nothing on the laptop screen.)
4) External monitor on the right of the laptop screen ---> no widgets on either screen.

I can repeat (3) and (4) indefinitely, with the same results. (3) to me is expected behaviour, but I would expect to see widgets on the external primary in (4). Or, at least, widgets on the other screen.

Alternatively, if the internal laptop's screen is primary, I see similar things. i.e. if the laptop screen is on the left, I see widgets on it. If it's on the right, I see nothing.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enable external monitor as well as internal laptop screen.
2. Select either as primary.
3. Place primary on the left.
4. Place primary on the right.
Actual Results:
In 3, pre-existing dashboard appears on the left screen.
In 4, no dashboard appears on either screen.

Expected Results:
3 is expected behaviour.
In 4, I expect dashboard to appear on the primary screen, on the right.

I have a panel at the bottom of the screen. This moves correctly to primary screen, no matter how the screens are arranged.

KDE 4.12.3 (not an option in the version selection above??)

I should also mention that this bug is particularly annoying in the following use case scenario. I have a laptop that I use by itself often (i.e. with it's internal screen). However, depending on my location, I often plug in an external monitor and use a dual-monitor setup.

Due to the physical constraints of my desk, my laptop is on the left, and the external on the right. If I configure the monitors to behave this way, then all my plasmoids disappear. My current workaround is to swap the virtual positions of the monitors, which is pretty annoying, especially when I wish to span things across monitors.

I have a similar issue on notebook with KDE 4.13.1 (openSUSE 13.1). I've placed some widgets on my main screen (notebook builtin screen). With external screen connected, widgets are visible only when external screen is below or on the right of main one. When it's above or on the left there are no widgets at all. See screenshots.

Hello!

This bug report was filed for KDE Plasma 4, which reached end-of-support status in August 2015. KDE Plasma 5's desktop shell has been almost completely rewritten for better performance and usability, so it is likely that this bug is already resolved in Plasma 5.

Accordingly, we hope you understand why we must close this bug report. If the issue described here is still present in KDE Plasma 5.12 or later, please feel free to open a new ticket in the "plasmashell" product after reading https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved/Bug_Reporting

If you would like to get involved in KDE's bug triaging effort so that future mass bug closes like this are less likely, please read https://community.kde.org/Get_Involved#Bug_Triaging

Thanks for your understanding!

Nate Graham
